Feasibility and Acceptability of a Telephone-Based Smoking Cessation Intervention for Qatari Residents
The steady increase in smoking rates has led to a call for wide-reaching and scalable interventions for smoking cessation in Qatar. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of an evidence-based smoking cessation program delivered by telephone for Qatari residents. A total of 248 participants were recruited through primary care centers and received five weekly scheduled proactive behavioral counseling calls from personnel trained in t…
A Telephone-Based Tobacco Cessation Program in the State of Qatar
In Qatar, tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death and disease. Telephone-based interventions for smoking are cost-effective and scalable interventions that are effective in promoting smoking behavior change. While many countries have implemented these services within their tobacco control programs, there is a distinct dearth of a telephone-based smoking cessation intervention that is adapted and tailored to meet the needs of people who …

Objective To assess the feasibility and acceptability of a beverage intervention in Hispanic adults. Design Eligible individuals identified as Hispanic, were 18–64 years old and had BMI 30·0–50·0 kg/m 2 . Participants were randomized 2:2:1 to one of three beverages: Mediterranean lemonade (ML), green tea (GT) or flavoured water control (FW). After a 2-week washout period, participants were asked to consume 32 oz (946 ml) of study beverage daily f…
Blood Lead Levels in Egyptian Children
The wide spectrum of damage to the health of children from environmental lead (Pb) is a matter of global concern. The neurotoxicity of long-term low-level exposure to lead has a special relevance in children.1,2 Although the consumption of paint chips or proximity to a lead-emitting smelter has been associated with PbB (blood lead) levels > 40 μg/dL, these 2 factors are not considered contributors to moderately elevated levels (> 10 μg/dL). There…
Development of a questionnaire and a database for assessing dietary D-limonene intake
Objective: Increasing recognition of the potential importance of phytochemicals in the aetiology of cancer and heart diseases has highlighted the need for methods to measure individual phytochemical consumption that are sufficiently simple to be used in large epidemiological studies and whose reproducibility and accuracy have been quantified. D-Limonene is a natural component of a variety of foods and beverages and is found mainly in citrus fruit…
Breast-feeding patterns in a rural village in Giza, Egypt
In a longitudinal study of infant feeding in rural Giza, Egypt, we found that 68.8% of the recruited mothers initiated early suckling of colostrum, but only 51.2% of the infants were exclusively breast-fed in the first week. Solid foods were introduced much earlier than at the recommended age of 4 to 6 months. Sixty percent of the mothers who participated in the study considered breast-feeding plus regular or irregular complementary feeding to be…
