Global prevalence of autism: A systematic review update
Camouflage and autism
The theme of camouflage recently gained unexpected momentum in autism research. Symposia and panel discussions are devoted to ‘ camouflage’ in autism conferences. Because of its association with intended deception, the term camouflage has poor fit with the autism world. However, psychopathologists have a long tradition of resorting to camouflage‐like terminology, from Freud’s reaction formation, to pseudoschizophrenia, to Winnicott’s false self, …
Early cannabis initiation and educational attainment: Is the association causal? Data from the French Tempo study
Background: Adolescent cannabis use has been reported to predict later educational attainment; however, results of past studies may be confounded by inappropriate control for factors that make some youths more likely to use cannabis precociously than others. We aimed to test the possibility of a causal relationship between early cannabis initiation and later academic achievement. Methods: Analyses are based on data collected among TEMPO cohort st…
Food insecurity and mental health problems among a community sample of young adults
Global Prevalence of Autism and Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders
We provide a systematic review of epidemiological surveys of autistic disorder and pervasive developmental disorders ( PDDs ) worldwide. A secondary aim was to consider the possible impact of geographic, cultural/ethnic, and socioeconomic factors on prevalence estimates and on clinical presentation of PDD . Based on the evidence reviewed, the median of prevalence estimates of autism spectrum disorders was 62/10 000. While existing estimates are v…
Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in a Total Population Sample
OBJECTIVE: Experts disagree about the causes and significance of the recent increases in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Limited data on population base rates contribute to this uncertainty. Using a population-based sample, the authors sought to estimate the prevalence and describe the clinical characteristics of ASDs in school-age children. METHOD: The target population was all 7- to 12-year-old children (N=55,266) in a South…
Epidemiology of Pervasive Developmental Disorders
Behavioral and Emotional Problems Reported by Parents of Children Ages 6 to 16 in 31 Societies
This study compared parents' ratings of behavioral and emotional problems on the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 1991;Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001) for general population samples of children ages 6 to 16 from 31 societies ( N = 55,508). Effect sizes for society ranged from .03 to .14. Effect sizes for gender were ≤ .01, with girls generally scoring higher on Internalizing problems and boys generally scoring higher on Externalizing problems. Ef…
Validation of the diagnosis of autism in general practitioner records
This study provides evidence that the positive predictive value of a diagnosis of autism recorded in the GPRD is high
A case-control study of autism and mumps-measles-rubella vaccination using the general practice research database: Design and methodology
Electronic health databases offer tremendous opportunities for evaluating the adverse effects of vaccines. However there is much scope for bias and confounding. The rigorous validation of all diagnoses and the collection of additional information by parental questionnaire in this study are essential to minimise the possibility of misleading results
Psychopathology in adopted and nonadopted children: A clinical sample
The relationships of adoptive status to presenting psychopathology and to demographic and psychosocial variables were examined in a large sample of children and adolescents who attended psychiatric outpatient services over a 14-year period. Adopted boys and girls were both at increased risk of disruptive behavior, including conduct disorders and ADHD. Age at time of adoption was not related to psychopathology
