  • The Politics of Chile: A Sociogeographical Assessment

    César N Caviedes, Cesar Caviedes•BOOK•Politics of Chile•2019

Chile's road to socialism, points out the author, was not a linear one. In the last twenty years political parties of an astonishingly wide range of opinions participated in the administration of the country, and their successes and failures have been clearly reflected in the shifting preferences of the voting population. Political ideas did not always receive nationwide acceptance; disobedience, dissent, and confrontation with the government or …

  • Missionspharmazie: Konzepte, Praxis, Organisation Und Wissenschaftliche Ausstrahlung

    César N Caviedes•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2013

In the colonial history of Latin America, there exists a conspicuous scarcity of research concerning both the role of European missions in treating sickness among the indigenous populations and the marriage between the traditional European pharmacopoeia and foreign medicinal plants after the Encounter. This investigative shortage is difficult to comprehend, considering that during the early 1500s considerable progress was made in human anatomy an…

  • Naturaleza e imperio: Araucanía, Patagonia, Pampas (1598 – 1740)

    César N Caviedes•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2010

The first century of Spanish colonization in Chile came to a halt with the devastating defeat of a Spanish garrison, headed by the governor, at Curalaba (1598), which prompted a Mapuche Indian insurrection that lasted more than 150 years. Making this setback even more critical to the Spanish presence in South America, pirates from England and Holland broke the imperial dominance of the Pacific Ocean and ransacked almost at will the fledgling sett…

  • Ciudad y poder: La construcción material y simbólica del Montevideo colonial (1723 - 1810)

    César N Caviedes•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2009

When Portuguese raiders founded Colonia do Sacramento on the eastern shore of the Río de la Plata estuary in 1680, the colonial authorities in Spain were justifiably alarmed. Their possessions in the New World were not only threatened by European adversaries, but now the Portuguese in Brazil had established a bridgehead in the Río de la Plata that allowed them to make inroads into the vast lowlands of this river system and, from there, to ultimat…

  • Climate variability, political crises, and historical population displacements in Ethiopia

    Joshua Comenetz, César N Caviedes•ARTICLE•Environmental Hazards•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 12

El Niño events from the 1970s through the 1990s caused extended droughts in Ethiopia. These droughts were followed by famine and political turmoil that resulted in radical changes of government, secession, and a massive program of population redistribution. Cartographic analysis of Ethiopian census data from 1984 and 1994 shows changes in demographic patterns. The consequences of government-imposed migration policies, whose catalyst was the clima…

  • Influencia de Enos sobre las variaciones interanuales de ciertos ríos en América del Sur

    Open Access•César N Caviedes•ARTICLE•Bulletin de l’Institut français…•1998

The ENSO influence over interannual variability of some rivers in South America The response of South American rivers to ENSO stimuli is studied under three conditions: El Niño (EN), Anti-Niño (AN), and normal years. A regionalization is thus obtained. Rivers in coastal Peru, Ecuador and extreme south of coastal Colombia have high discharges during summers with El Niño. Low run-off is experienced in Anti-Niños. Rivers in the Sierra of Peru and th…

PRODUCTION of fruit for export is a rapidly expanding, prominent, and profitable agricultural sector in Latin America. By volume and value, export of fruit from some countries is displacing traditional agricultural commodities such as coffee, cacao, bananas, pineapples, and grains. For example, melons from Mexico are systematically routed to North American markets; grapes, peaches, and plums from Chile find their way to European and North America…

non. January brought a cessation of the warm-water advance which, along with a normal amount of rainfall, still seemed to be nothing more than a typical summer development in the coastal departments of Tumbes and Piura. By February, conditions had changed: unusually warm (more than 24?C) waters suddenly appeared along the Talara coast as well as ten miles off the coast between Punta Aguja and Salaverry. Yet heavy rains had not been reported. By M…
