  • Exploring machine learning classification for community based health insurance enrollment in Ethiopia

Open Access•Seyifemickael Amare Yilema, Yegnanew A Shiferaw et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Community-based health insurance (CBHI) is a vital tool for achieving universal health coverage (UHC), a key global health priority outlined in the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Sub-Saharan Africa continues to face challenges in achieving UHC and protecting individuals from the financial burden of disease. As a result, CBHI has become popular in low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed …

  • Spatiotemporal models with confounding effects

Open Access•Haile Mekonnen Fenta, Ding-Geng Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Different strategies have been developed to minimize under-five mortality (U5M) in sub-Saharan African (sSA) countries; however, it is still a major health concern for children in the region. Spatiotemporal modeling is important for areal data collected over time. However, when the number of time points and spatial areas is large and the areas are disconnected, fitting the model becomes computationally complex because of the high numb…

  • Spatial disparities of antenatal care utilization among pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa—Bayesian geo-additive modelling approach

Open Access•Denekew Bitew Belay, Haile Mekonnen Fenta et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Antenatal care (ANC) is critical for ensuring healthy pregnancies and positive birth outcomes. Despite its importance, significant disparities in ANC access and utilization exist across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), influenced by various socioeconomic, geographical, and systemic factors. This study aimed to analyze the spatial disparities in the proportion of recommended ANC utilization and its associated risk factors among pregnant women…

  • Effects of vector control interventions on spatio-temporal changes of falciparum malaria risk in children aged 2–10 in sub-Saharan African regions during 2011–2020

Open Access•Changkuoth Jock Chol, Denekew Bitew Belay et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has a disproportionately high malaria fatality rate globally, with young children accounting for the majority of fatalities. The objective of this study is to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of malaria infection risk and assess the effect of vector control interventions on malaria infection rates in SSA nations. Methods: malaria infections and vector control interventions across 634 administrative area…

  • Comparisons of cox semi-parametric and parametric shared frailty models

Open Access•Haile Mekonnen Fenta, Ding-Geng Chen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The exponential shared frailty hazard model with lognormal frailty distribution demonstrated better performance compared to the Cox semiparametric model for identifying risk factors for under-five children across sSA countries. Place of residence, wealth index, media exposure, birth order, birth interval, access to improved water, and use of clean fuels for cooking were the significant risk factors on time to death of under-five children in sSA

  • Maternal mortality in Ethiopia (2015–2025)

    Open Access•Merga Abdissa Aga, Ding-Geng Chen•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Maternal mortality in Ethiopia remains unacceptably high yet preventable. Persistent inequities, poor service quality, and health-system gaps continue to drive maternal deaths. Despite national initiatives such as the Health Sector Transformation Plan II (2015-2025) and the Maternal and Child Health Roadmap, progress is uneven. Achieving the SDG 3.1 target of < 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030 demands stronger referral systems, equitable…

  • Prevalence and associated factors of immunization among under-five children in Somalia

Open Access•Denekew Bitew Belay, Mohammed Tauseef Ali et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

A large proportion of children did not complete the full vaccination schedule. Socio-demographic factors, such as age, region, residence, educational level, wealth quantile, child size at birth, parity, and birth order, had a significant impact on the number of children vaccinated in Somalia. These findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions for addressing these factors. Implementing initiatives based on these conclusions has the…

  • Moderating Effects of Positive Parenting on the Perceived Peer Alcohol Use and Adolescent Alcohol Use Relationship

Open Access•Ai Bo, Liwei Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Child and Adolescent Social Work…•2023

  • A Synergetic R-Shiny Portal for Modeling and Tracking of Covid-19 Data

Open Access•Mahdi Salehi, Mohammad Arashi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a useful online interactive dashboard ( https://mahdisalehi.shinyapps.io/Covid19Dashboard/ ) that visualize and follow confirmed cases of COVID-19 in real-time. The dashboard was made publicly available on 6 April 2020 to illustrate the counts of confirmed cases, deaths, and recoveries of COVID-19 at the level of country or continent. This dashboard is intended as a user-friendly dashboard for researchers…

  • Using Structural Equation Modeling to Assess the Links between Tobacco Smoke Exposure, Volatile Organic Compounds, and Respiratory Function for Adolescents Aged 6 to 18 in the United States

    Open Access•Bonnie E Shook‐sa, Bonnie Shook-Sa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Asthma is an inflammatory airway disease that affects 22 million Americans in the United States. Research has found associations between impaired respiratory function, including asthma and increased symptoms among asthmatics, and common indoor air pollutants, including tobacco smoke exposure and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, findings linking VOC exposure and asthma are inconsistent and studies are of mixed quality due to design limi…
