Improving the Argumentation Abilities of High School Students in China via the Toulmin Argumentation Pattern, Popper’s Falsificationism, and the Game of Eleusis
Determinants of K-12 teachers' behavioral intention to use digital textbook platforms
This study investigates the factors shaping K-12 teachers' behavioral intention to use Yuejiao Xiangyun Digital Textbook Platform in basic education. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework by integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success (D&M) model, the study employs a mixed-methods design that combines Structural Equation Modeling and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative…
Constraining the projections of tropical extreme precipitation with radiation–precipitation relationship
Over the tropics, a robust statistical relationship between outgoing longwave radiation ( R ) and precipitation ( P ) is observed, linked to the cloud-radiative effect (CRE). To quantify this R – P relation, we define the CRE parameter, which exhibits significant disparities across global climate models (GCMs), with most overestimating it relative to the observation. Given the strong correlation between the CRE parameter and both historical and f…

Improving argumentation by teaching philosophy of science with critical questions in Chinese senior high school
This study examines the use of critical questions (CQs) as an ‘explicit’ pedagogical method in the nature of science to teach Chinese high school students topics of philosophy of science (POS). The study results, evaluated through deductive thematic and qualitative comparative analyses using Toulmin’s argumentation patterns and a critical integrative argumentation model, revealed that students who participated in the POS course showed significant…

Impact of cloud radiative forcing on tropical cyclone frequency and intensity through tuning the cloud ice-to-snow diameter threshold
Cloud radiative effect (CRE) is crucial for the development of tropical cyclones (TCs). This study investigates the impact of cloud radiation on TC seeds and TCs in an aquaplanet model by tuning ‘threshold diameter to convert cloud ice particles to snow’ (DCS). With increased cloud cover associated with higher DCS, seed frequency decreases, but the greater intensity increase of seeds leads to a higher survival rate from seeds to TCs. The changes …
The Value of the Philosophy of Science in Senior High School Science Education from the Perspective of the Nature of Science
Atmospheric elemental carbon pollution and its regional health disparities in China
Previous studies have reported that atmospheric elemental carbon (EC) may pose potentially elevated toxicity when compared to total ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). However, most research on EC has been conducted in the US and Europe, whereas China experiences significantly higher EC pollution levels. Investigating the health impact of EC exposure in China presents considerable challenges due to the absence of a monitoring network to do…
Associations Between High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein and All-Cause Mortality Among Oldest-Old in Chinese Longevity Areas
Background The association between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels and all-cause mortality for the oldest-old (aged 80 years or older) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations between hsCRP concentrations and the risks of all-cause mortality, and further identify the potential modifying factors affecting these associations among the oldest-old. Methods This prospective, community-based cohort study included 2,2…
Association of ambient ozone exposure with anxiety and depression among middle-aged and older adults in China
Anxiety and depression are severe public health problems worldwide. The effects of ozone exposure on anxious and depressive symptoms remain largely unknown, especially in China. We evaluated the associations between ozone exposure and depression and anxiety among middle-aged and older adults across China. A multi-center community-based repeated measurement study among middle-aged and older adults was conducted from 2017 to 2018 in 11 provinces in…
Air pollution, residential greenness, and metabolic dysfunction biomarkers
We found air pollution and greenness had independent and interactive effect on MetS components, which may ultimately manifest in pre-mature mortality. These study findings call for green space planning in urban areas and air pollution mitigation in rural areas
Is Hemoglobin Concentration a Linear Predictor of Mortality in Older Adults From Chinese Longevity Regions
Introduction: The association patterns of hemoglobin (HB) concentrations with mortality among the longevity older adults are unclear. We aimed to evaluate the relationship among older adults form Chinese longevity regions. Methods: We included 1,785 older adults aged ≥65 years (mean age, 86.7 years; 1,002 women, 783 men) from the community-based Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We estimated the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence…

Incorporating biomarkers into the study of socio-economic status and health among older adults in China
The social gradient in health - that individuals with lower SES have worse health than those with higher SES- is welldocumented using self-reports of health in more developed countries. Less is known about the relationship between SES and health biomarkers among older adults residing in less developed countries. We use data from the ChineseLongitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) longevity areas sub-sample to examine the social gradient in h…
Association between Changing Mortality of Digestive Tract Cancers and Water Pollution
The relationship between the ever-increasing cancer mortality and water pollution is an important public concern in China. This study aimed to explore the association between serious water pollution and increasing digestive cancer mortality in the Huai River Basin (HRB) in China. A series of frequency of serious pollution (FSP) indices including water quality grade (FSPWQG), biochemical oxygen demand (FSPBOD), chemical oxygen demand (FSPCOD), and…
Association of misconceptions about HIV transmission and discriminatory attitudes in rural China
This study examined HIV-related knowledge and attitudes among 524 randomly selected adult residents from 12 rural Chinese communities where HIV infection among plasma donors has been reported. Most participants were familiar with the main routes of HIV transmission but had substantial misconceptions about risk of HIV transmission through casual social contacts. Higher score of misconception and being older and married independently predicted stro…
