Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980
BACKGROUND: One of the global targets for non-communicable diseases is to halt, by 2025, the rise in the age-standardised adult prevalence of diabetes at its 2010 levels. We aimed to estimate worldwide trends in diabetes, how likely it is for countries to achieve the global target, and how changes in prevalence, together with population growth and ageing, are affecting the number of adults with diabetes. METHODS: We pooled data from population-ba…

Effect Of Delonix Regia Leaf Extract On Glucose Tolerance In Glucoseinduced Hyperglycemic Mice
Delonix regia (Fabaceae) leaf is used in folk medicine of Bangladesh for the treatment of diabetes, but so far no scientific study has been done which may support its use in traditional medicine. The present study was carried out to evaluate the possible glucose tolerance efficacy of methanolic extract of Delonix regia leaf using glucose-induced hyperglycemic mice. The extract at different doses was administered one hr prior to glucose administra…
Antihyperglycemic effect of Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) seed extract in alloxan-induced diabetic rats and its use in diabetes mellitus
The effects of ethanol extract of Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) seeds on the blood glucose levels in alloxan-induced diabetic rats at different doses (2 g/kg, 1 g/kg, 0.5 g/kg and 0.1 g/kg) were studied. The hypoglycemic effect of extract was compared with that of the standard antidiabetic drug (glimepiride, 4 mg/kg) single dose. The extract showed significant activity against the diabetic state induced by alloxan but the intensity of hyp…
Gender and locality differences in tobacco prevalence among adult Bangladeshis
Nearly a third of the population in Bangladesh use some form of tobacco. There are marked urban-rural and male-female differences. This difference is mainly accounted for by the higher prevalence of chewing tobacco in rural areas, rural female tobacco usage is close to double than the urban rate. Smoking rates were low in Bangladeshi females, more so in urban than rural areas. The tobacco awareness programme in Bangladesh might require putting em…
A diarrhea clinic in rural Bangladesh
Attendance rates at a diarrhea clinic were monitored in a defined population in rural Bangladesh. Weekly home visits were also carried out to determine diarrheal attacks in communities within six miles of the clinic. Within the first one mile radius, 90 per cent of diarrheal cases came to the clinic for treatment. At two miles the attendance fell to 70 per cent for males and 40 per cent for females. On an average, the greater the distance to the …
