  • Capital-izing Food

    Samantha L Martin•ARTICLE•Gastronomica The Journal of Food…•2025

In the summer of 1887, the citizens of Sioux City, Iowa, erected the first of what would be five successive Corn Palaces in their downtown. In essence, the building was a bricolage of architectural styles tied together under the unifying theme of corn. Billed as an appreciation of the region’s agricultural bounty and heralded as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World,’ the Sioux City Corn Palace was an exuberant American manifestation of architecture pa…

  • Mirages of Emptiness in Samburu, North Central Kenya

    Brendan O’neill, Samantha L Martin•ARTICLE•Journal of Architectural Education•2023

To a newcomer, Samburu, northern Kenya, may first appear as a vast, uninhabited landscape—a reddish, arid flatland punctuated by umbrella acacia trees. The vistas are expansive, occasionally terminating abruptly in a distant peak or serrated range. Assumptions of remoteness are misleading. This terrain, although far from Kenya’s metropolitan centers, is not empty. The Samburu people inhabit this landscape, relying on material and rhythms that ble…

  • A Comparison of Bioimpedance Analysis vs. Dual X-ray Absorptiometry for Body Composition Assessment in Postpartum Women and Non-Postpartum Controls

Open Access•Valene Garr Barry, Samantha L Martin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Postpartum fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) may be informative predictors of future disease risk among women; hence, there is growing use of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to quantify FFM and FM among postpartum women due to the quick, non-invasive, and inexpensive nature of BIA. Despite this, very few studies have examined BIA's performance, and it remains unclear as to whether specific BIA equations are needed for postpartum women.…
