Jorge Amado
In 1946, Jorge Amado was elected federal representative for the Brazilian National Assembly as a candidate of the Brazilian Communist Party. This assembly was in charge of bringing democracy back to Brazil after the end of Getúlio Vargas's dictatorship. Amado's electoral victory, at the age of thirty-four, proved his position as a novelist of great popular prestige. However, two years later, he was impeached, and he chose to exile himself and his…

Rationalism Called into Question in the Latin American Narrative
Among the many elements markedly present within Latin American twentieth-century literature, one that stands out as a characteristic feature is the criticism of a rationalist logic. This criticism is expressed in distinct ways, extending from simple critique to the employment of the mimetic realism that dominates this type of cultural production to the exploration of two categories of the real. Is Jorge Amado the Gateway to Brazil, or Not
In the national and international search for a Brazilian identity, we often say and hear that we are the country of soccer, samba, and Carnaval. Substance use among the mentally ill
Substance use among a random sample of mentally ill, community-based patients was examined. Current use was found to have declined substantially from a high lifetime prevalence, and a family history of substance abuse was associated with moderate to heavy use. No association was found between heavy substance use and elevated psychopathology, hospitalization, or medication noncompliance. Hospital admissions and some symptoms were less prevalent am…
Acceptance of the mental illness label by psychotic patients
Labeling theory predicts that psychotic patients who accept the label of mental illness will function less well than those who reject their diagnosis. Accepted psychotherapeutic theory suggests the reverse. Two predictive models were tested. Results supported the central hypothesis of the psychotherapeutic model but not that of the labeling model, although some elements of the latter model were affirmed. Besides acceptance of diagnosis, an intern…
Concurrent validity of the bem sex role inventory
Social Desirability and the Bem Sex-Role Inventory
Responses of 71 female and 30 male undergraduates to Bem's inventory and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale yielded differential strength of association of social desirability and Masculinity and Femininity scales. Masculinity accounted for little variance but Femininity was more strongly correlated with social desirability
