Mentoring, employment assistance, and enhanced staff outreach for older youth in care
Supporting collaborative relationships between parents and non‐relative foster parents
Despite policy recommendations that foster parents form positive relationships with the parents of children in their care, this is difficult to achieve in actual practice. This study examined relationships between foster parents and parents in a sample of 13 triads of parents, foster parents and caseworkers of children ages 5–13 living in non‐relative foster homes with a goal of reunification ( N = 38). Findings highlighted the evolution of relat…

Predicting family reunification, adoption, and subsidized guardianship among adolescents in foster care
Although national legislation has attempted to decrease the length of time that children spend in foster care, these policies have been less effective with adolescents than with children, raising questions about how best to promote permanency for adolescents. This study examined factors that predict adolescent adoption, subsidized guardianship, and reunification. The caseworkers and foster parents of 203 randomly selected 12- to 13-year-olds plac…

Parental Visiting, Conflicting Allegiances, and Emotional and Behavioral Problems Among Foster Children
This study tested the hypothesis that frequent parental visiting is associated with foster children's conflicting allegiances to foster families and biological parents among a random sample of 199 young adolescents placed in family foster care for longer than 1 year. Conflicting allegiances were expected to be associated with emotional and behavioral disturbance. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that frequent visitation is potentially d…
Foster Children's Behavioral Disturbance and Detachment from Caregivers and Community Institutions
Unintended pregnancy and depressive symptoms among first-time mothers and fathers
The consequences of unintended first pregnancy on the mental health of cohabitating couples (N = 124) were examined in the third trimester of pregnancy and at four months postpartum. Results indicated that the influence of unintended pregnancy on parental depressive symptoms is complex and via different mechanisms for men and women. Pregnancy viewed as unintended by males and intended by their partners appeared to pose the greatest risk for postp…
