Sleep Problems and Autism Impairments in a Large Community Sample of Children and Adolescents
Sleep Onset and Night Waking Insomnias in Preschoolers with Psychiatric Disorders
Objective Sleep Measurement in Typically and Atypically Developing Preschool Children with ADHD-Like Profiles
Sleep Architecture in Infants of Substance-Abusing Mothers
This longitudinal, year-long study compared sleep-wake state organization in two groups of infants-infants whose mothers abused substances during their pregnancies and nonexposed, typically developing, age-matched comparison infants-to determine whether differences in sleep-wake state organization existed between the two groups. Seventeen infants of mothers who were participating in a parent-infant residential treatment program for substance abus…

Secretin and Sleep in Children with Autism

Maternal well-being and sleep–wake behaviors in infants
The development of an organized sleep–wake cycle in young infants is influenced by characteristics of both the infant and the parent, and by the nature of their dyadic interaction. Sleep–wake state organization is influenced first by homeostatic biological regulation, and later by socioemotional regulation. This report describes a feasibility study using an olfactory intervention designed to bridge the transition from physiologic to social regula…

Infant sleep problems
Infant sleep problems have become prevalent as complaints of parents to clinicians during the first 2 years of the child's life. This paper reviews (1) identification of multiple etiological sources for infant sleep problems from a systems perspective, (2) the assessment of sleep disturbances, and (3) the applica tion of intervention methods to the appropriate component of system dysfunction. These areas are reviewed by integrating research findi…
Subjectivity in parent-infant relationships
Bowlby (1969/1982, 1973, 1980) has proposed that internal working models of self and other are psychic structures that guide an individual's subjective experience of and responses to others in important relationships. They are termed “working” models because they are believed to be dynamic mental representations that are modifiable, although they are presumed to become more resistant to change after the early years. This paper reviews Bowlby's co…
Adolescent mothers' perceptions of their infants before and after birth
Adolescent mothers had stable perceptions of several aspects of their infants' temperaments prenatally and at four months postnatally. Infants who were less responsive during feedings were rated as unpredictable by their mothers before and after birth. Implications for parental perceptions of their infants' temperament and behavior are discussed

Sleep habits of children and the identification of pathologically sleepy children
Diuranal Rhythms in 2- and 8-Week-Old Infants
Time of day differences in sleep-waking state organization were studied in 2- and 8-week-old infants by means of videotape recordings. Observations were made prior to and following adaptation to standard laboratory conditions previously found to be stressful. Diurnal rhythms occurred for a number of component sleep-waking states under the nonstressful conditions only, and increased with age
The use of 5-hydroxytryptophan in a child with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
The Effects of Circumcision on Sleep-Wake States in Human Neonates
The effect of circumcision on the proportion of subsequent sleep-wake states was assessed in eleven, normal, full-term neonates. We speculated, as had been previously suggested, that the proportion of quiet sleep would be increased as a response to this “procedure.” Our results demonstrate that no quiet sleep state shifts were present in the immediate hour after circumcision; instead, significant increases in the proportion of wakefulness were no…
