Parents' tendency to perceive children with behavior problems as "disabled" frequently represents a projection of helplessness, and can be interpreted as a defense against anger. Shared family presumptions regarding the disabling effects of "anger" may lead to revision of behavioral goals or preclude adoption of effective problem-solving tactics. Implications for therapy are offered
