Addressing pandemic-related guilt and shame in U.S. military veterans
Findings suggest that veterans with PTSD and guilt may benefit more from trauma- or morally injurious event-focused interventions like TrIGR, while veterans without PTSD may be adequately supported by SCT. Larger, more diverse samples are needed to identify optimal approaches for guilt and shame arising from morally injurious events. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
A pilot study of stellate ganglion block paired with exposure therapy
SGB paired with psychotherapy is feasible and acceptable to veterans and holds promise for symptom reduction among veterans with combat-related PTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
Longitudinal associations of PTSD and social support by support functions among returning veterans
The direction of associations between PTSD symptoms and support varied by function of support, suggesting nuanced associations between PTSD and perceived social support. Clinicians should assess and target social functioning during PTSD treatment. Further research is needed to replicate findings in other populations and for other trauma types. An Open Trial to Test Participant Satisfaction With and Feasibility of a Computerized Intervention for Women Veterans With Sexual Trauma Histories Seeking Primary Care Treatment
Sexual trauma is prevalent among women veterans and associated with health risks including hazardous drinking, intimate partner violence (IPV), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Safe and Healthy Experiences (SHE) is a computerized intervention to reduce these health risks. SHE was pilot tested in an open trial ( N = 20) with women veterans with a history of sexual trauma and associated health risks. Women reported high satisfaction with …
Childhood maltreatment and post-deployment psychological distress
Our findings suggest that childhood maltreatment may serve to influence returning veterans' experiences of psychological distress indirectly through increased emotional numbing following deployment. The importance of attending to emotional numbing symptoms among veterans with experiences of childhood maltreatment after deployment is highlighted. (PsycINFO Database Record
Mental health treatment utilization in OIF/OEF National Guard and Reserve troops with and without DSM diagnoses
Military service members have an increased risk of developing mental health (MH) problems following deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan, yet only a small percentage seek mental health treatment. The aim of the present study was to explore patterns of MH service utilization within the first 12 months following return from combat deployment. Participants were 169 service members who had returned from war-zone deployment in either Iraq or Afghanistan …
Different types of combat experiences and associated symptoms in OEF and OIF National Guard and reserve veterans
The relative degree of exposure to life threat and death/loss events in a war-zone may impact the development of different types of symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of considering different types of trauma exposure in future research. (PsycINFO Database Record
Unique relations between counterfactual thinking and DSM–5 PTSD symptom clusters
Results from the present study provide further support for the role of rumination in specific PTSD symptom clusters above and beyond symptoms of depression, age, and number of traumatic life events endorsed. Future work may consider investigating interventions to reduce rumination in PTSD. (PsycINFO Database Record
Ten‐Year Rank‐Order Stability of P ersonality Traits and Disorders in a Clinical Sample
OBJECTIVE: This study compares the 10-year retest stability of normal traits, pathological traits, and personality disorder dimensions in a clinical sample. METHOD: Ten-year rank-order stability estimates for the Revised NEO Personality Inventory, Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality, and Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV Personality Disorders were evaluated before and after correcting for test-retest dependability and internal consist…
Trajectories of PTSD and substance use disorders in a longitudinal study of personality disorders
This study investigated the co-occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) in a sample ( N = 668) recruited for personality disorders and followed longitudinally as part of the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study. The study both examined rates of co-occurring disorders at baseline and temporal relationships between PTSD and substance use disorders over 4 years. Subjects with a lifetime …
Trauma, dissociation, impulsivity, and self-mutilation among substance abuse patients
Among 85 substance abusing or dependent inpatients, it was found that those with histories of distressing traumatic events reported more self-mutilative acts, higher levels of dissociation, and a greater degree of impulsivity than did patients without such histories. Implications of the findings for research and clinical practice are discussed
