Linking science and policy to support the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury
The Minamata Convention on Mercury, with its objective to protect human health and the environment from the dangers of mercury (Hg), entered into force in 2017. The Convention outlines a life-cycle approach to the production, use, emissions, releases, handling, and disposal of Hg. As it moves into the implementation phase, scientific work and information are critically needed to support decision-making and management. This paper synthesizes exist…
An approach for verifying biogenic greenhouse gas emissions inventories with atmospheric CO 2 concentration data
Verifying national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories is a critical step to ensure that reported emissions data to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are accurate and representative of a country's contribution to GHG concentrations in the atmosphere. Furthermore, verifying biogenic fluxes provides a check on estimated emissions associated with managing lands for carbon sequestration and other activities, wh…

Trends in Antiblack Prejudice, 1972-1984
The 1972-84 trend in antiblack prejudice in the United States is decomposed with the use of a better method for isolating the cohort replacement component of a trend. Three major findings emerge. First, antiblack prejudice (as measured by questions in the General Social Survey) has declined in recent years; this is true for the South, for the non-South, and for the United States as a whole. Second, the decline in prejudice stems from cohort repla…
Increasing Black students' utilization of mental health services
Patterns of utilization of college mental health services are similor to those of community services, in that both are under-used by black people, who are seen mainly at crisis points. The senior author, a black psychiatric social worker, discusses the reasons for this, and describes methods that significantly increased black student participation in a pilot program of mental health services at a city college
Attitudes toward Sunday and Their Relation to Depression
An attitude scale toward Sunday containing behavioral preferences with the dimensionality exciting-boring was constructed, based on the performance of 76 alcoholic patients, to investigate the effect weekends might have on patients. Positive or elated patient attitudes reflecting the psychological status of activation correlate negatively with measurements of depression, and positively with judgments of social desirability
