Language without communication: A case study
Two branches of language functioning are now actively being studied: one focuses on language as a system for expressing syntactic-semantic relations, the other as a system of interpersonal communication. In this paper, a case is presented of a child who at 3; 3 showed a marked schism between these two areas. In the former domain he displayed behaviour that in most respects was age appropriate and relatively extensive. In the latter domain, he dis…
Some effects of testing methodology on children's cross-modal performance
Cognitive functions of language in the preschool years
In this review, the hypothesis was advanced that language influences the young child's thinking and behavior at an age earlier than that commonly reported. Consideration was given to three areas: concept formation, communication, and problem solving. Prelinguistic mastery in these functions is available through sensorimotor skills. Such skills, however, are geared to visual spatial information. In the absence of this information or in the presenc…
Intermodal and intramodal retention of visual and tactual information in young children
Implicit Assumptions Underlying Preschool Intervention Programs
Verbal deficiencies in abstract thinking in early reading retardation
In previous research in the authors' laboratory, language deficiencies in coding temporal sequences were found to be associated with reading retardation at fourth grade. In the present study, similar difficulties were found among first grade retarded readers. These deficiencies could not be attributed to perceptual difficulties
The Effectiveness of Various Soothing Techniques on Human Neonates
In a study of the efficacy of soothing stimuli presented in different sensory modalities to human neonates, auditory, oral, vestibular, and thermal stimuli were compared and a nonstimulus control period was included. Behavioral ratings and heart rate measurements indicated that the soothing stimuli were all effective as compared with the control period, but no one stimulus was more effective than any other. Neonates could be characterized by over…
Deficiencies in verbal labeling in retarded readers
In a study of the conversion of visual-temporal to visual-spatial patterns, retarded readers were found to be inferior to normal readers. This deficiency in integrating sensory information was found to be dependent upon the retarded readers' difficulty in labeling stimuli
A Comparison of Behavioral Ratings and Heart Rate Measurements in Human Neonates
Behavioral ratings and heart rate measurements of 20 neonates were recorded simultaneously under conditions of stimulation and nonstimulation. The two measurements were found to be highly correlated both between and within individuals. Consistent individual differences were obtained for both the behavioral ratings and heart rates produced by the experimental conditions. It was found that differences in autonomic activity could be fully evaluated …
