  • Bringing Organizations Back In: Multilevel Feedback Effects on Individual Civic Inclusion

    Open Access•Kristin A Go, Kristin A Goss et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•2019•Cited by: 17•References: 64

Policy feedback scholarship has focused on how laws and their implementation affecteitherorganizations (e.g., their resources, priorities, political opportunities, or incentive structures)orindividuals (e.g., their civic skills and resources or their psychological orientations toward the state). However, in practice the distinction between organizations and individuals is not clear‐cut: Organizations interpret policy for individuals, and individu…

  • The Swells between the “Waves”

    Kristin A Go, Kristin A Goss et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of U. S. Women's…•2017

American women’s history is often understood as unfolding in two movement “waves”: the movement for political equality (suffrage) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the movement for social and economic equality a half-century later. In the period between these two waves, women supposedly retreated from the public sphere. This chapter argues that the inter-wave era was actually a politically vibrant time for American women. …

  • Firearm-Related Laws in All 50 US States, 1991–2016

Open Access•Michael Siegel, Molly Pahn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2017•Cited by: 13•References: 22

Objectives. To describe a new database containing detailed annual information on firearm-related laws in place in each of the 50 US states from 1991 to 2016 and to summarize key trends in firearm-related laws during this time period. Methods. Using Thomson Reuters Westlaw data to access historical state statutes and session laws, we developed a database indicating the presence or absence of each of 133 provisions of firearm laws in each state ove…

  • Easiness of Legal Access to Concealed Firearm Permits and Homicide Rates in the United States

Michael Siegel, Ziming Xuan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 16

Objectives. To examine the relation of “shall-issue” laws, in which permits must be issued if requisite criteria are met; “may-issue” laws, which give law enforcement officials wide discretion over whether to issue concealed firearm carry permits or not; and homicide rates. Methods. We compared homicide rates in shall-issue and may-issue states and total, firearm, nonfirearm, handgun, and long-gun homicide rates in all 50 states during the 25-yea…

  • The Socialization of Conflict and Its Limits: Gender and Gun Politics in America

    Open Access•Kristin A Go, Kristin A Goss•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2017•Cited by: 19•References: 12

Objective This study considers efforts by gun rights and gun regulation groups to socialize the conflict over firearms policy by engaging a coveted issue public—women. I assess whether gun rights groups have succeeded in weakening women's support for gun control laws and increasing women's firearms ownership. I also examine whether gun regulation groups have succeeded in mobilizing their female sympathizers for political action. Methods Drawing o…

  • Defying the odds on gun regulation: The passage of bipartisan mental health laws across the States

    Kristin A Go, Kristin A Goss•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2015

This article documents an important exception to the conventional wisdom that politicians just will not tighten gun laws. Over the past decade, and mostly under the radar, both state and federal legislators have enacted more than 80 laws designed to regulate access to guns by people with mental illness and to support programs to reduce gun violence within that population. This study begins with a brief overview and evaluation of the barriers to e…

  • Foundations of Feminism: How Philanthropic Patrons Shaped Gender Politics

    Open Access•Kristin A Go, Kristin A Goss•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2007•Cited by: 9•References: 8

Objectives. Although recent research has documented the contributions of philanthropic foundations as “patrons” of the major identity movements, scholars know very little about the specific ways foundations have influenced these movements' development and impact. This study examines the role of foundations in shaping the U.S. women's movement of the 1960s–1980s, in particular the role that foundations played in deciding which of its claimsmakers—…

  • Rethinking the Political Participation Paradigm: The Case of Women and Gun Control

    Kristin A Go, Kristin A Goss•ARTICLE•Women & Politics•2003•Cited by: 6•References: 9

Political-participation studies have paid too little attention to the cognitive and emotional motivations for citizen engagement. This study uses a natural experiment in issue-centered mobilization, a women's march for stricter gun control, to construct a fuller model of political participation, one that focuses on the interaction between individuals and issues. I find that reframing political issues to resonate with social roles and responsibili…
