  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and the Use of Health Services

    Eva Y Deykin, Terence M Keane et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2001

OBJECTIVE: Prior research has demonstrated increased use of medical services among persons with anxiety and depression. This investigation examined the possible association of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with the use of nonmental health services. METHOD: A case-comparison design enrolled 102 high users of health services and 54 low users who were assessed for PTSD diagnosis and severity of PTSD symptoms. Subjects were male veterans recei…

  • Suicidal ideation and attempts among chemically dependent adolescents

    Eva Y Deykin, Stephen L Buka•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•Cited by: 6•References: 18

OBJECTIVES. Suicidal ideation and attempts were examined in a population of chemically dependent adolescents, a group at high risk of self-destructive behavior. METHODS. The prevalence and correlates of suicidality and of major depressive disorder were assessed by the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and a structured family and social history interview with 300 addicts aged 15 through 19 years. RESULTS. Suicidal ideation was reported by 31% to 75% o…

  • Paediatric care and immunisation among Jordanian children

Open Access•Carla Makhlouf Obermeyer, Eva Deykin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1993

This paper investigates the behavioural aspects of health care use for Jordanian children from birth to 3 years using data from a national survey. Statistical analysis indicate differences in the determinants of the use of paediatric care and immunisation: whereas immunisation coverage was already good in 1983 (and has improved subsequently), paediatric care is used for fewer than half of the children under 1 year of age. Socioeconomic and demogr…

  • Fathers of adopted children

Eva Y Deykin, Patricia Patti et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1988•References: 7

Data on their children's adoptions and their own subsequent adjustment were provided by 125 birthfathers. Paternal age at the child's birth, involvement in the adoption process, and the major reason for adoption determined the birthfathers' current views of adoption. Search for the child was correlated with hopes of retrieval. Loss of the child remained an unresolved issue independent of other areas of functioning. Legal and procedural implicatio…

  • Adolescent depression, alcohol and drug abuse

Eva Y Deykin, Janice C Levy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 30•References: 18

The Diagnostic Interview Schedule was employed to ascertain the prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD), alcohol and substance abuse in a sample of 424 college students aged 16 to 19 years. Applying DSM III criteria, the prevalence of MDD was 6.8 per cent; of alcohol abuse, 8.2 per cent; and of substance abuse 9.4 per cent. Alcohol abuse was associated with MDD, but not with other psychiatric diagnoses. Substance abuse was associated both w…

  • Non-fatal suicidal and life-threatening behavior among 13- to 17-year old adolescents seeking emergency medical care

Eva Y Deykin, Richard Perlow et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•References: 5

In suicidal behavior emergency room admissions of 13- to 17-year olds at the Brockton Hospital (Massachusetts), females predominated over males by almost two to one. For subclassification of life-threatening behaviors, frequency was about the same for males and females, but for suicide attempts and suicide gestures, female frequency was two to four times that of males. Repeat episodes of self-inflicted injury were more common among females. The t…

  • The postadoption experience of surrendering parents

Eva Y Deykin, Lee Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1984•References: 3

In order to ascertain the effects on subsequent life adjustment of having relinquished a child for adoption, a survey was conducted among 334 individuals, most of whom are members of Concerned United Birthparents. Findings indicate that having surrendered a child is perceived by these respondents as having a protracted negative influence on their lives in the areas of marriage, fertility, and parenting. Implications for adoption work and policy a…

  • Process and outcome of therapy with depressed women

Shirley Jacobson, Eva Deykin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1977•References: 18

The relationship between the process of psychotherapy and patient outcome, as measured by completion or relapse, was examined in an eight-month trial of therapy with outpatient depressed women. Of four therapy components analyzed, discussion of mental symptoms and overt expression of anxiety were significantly associated with relapse

  • Life Functioning in Families of Delinquent Boys

    Eva Y Deykin•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1972•Cited by: 4

A model for assessing life functioning in families of delinquent or predelinquent boys is presented. The quantification of six major areas of family life functioning has proved to be a valid instrument which can accurately differentiate between type of symptomatology displayed by boys, their ability to profit from therapy, and the differing family perceptions of the usefulness of the therapeutic program

  • The relatives of schizophrenic patients

    Eva Y Deykin, Gerald L Klerman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1966•References: 11

Relatives of acutely, ill, hospitalized schizophrenic patients were assessed for their potential resourcefulness. The assessment was based on nine personal and psychiatric traits. Seventy-five per cent of the sample had at least mild potential for resourcefulness. Wives, fathers and siblings were overrepresented in this group whereas mothers and husbands constituted the group of relatives with poor or no potential for resourcefulness
