Centering Prayer as a Healing Response to Everyday Stress
Social Perception of the Personality of the Disabled
This paper examines the perception of disability in relation to the disability status of a hypothetical person and that of the experimenter. Meyer, Gouvier, Duke, and Advokat (2001) found that participants had positive attitudes towards disability if the experimenter was disabled. This experiment moves the study of perceptions about disability into the realm of personality. Participants ( N = 120) read a scenario in which the target person was ei…

Ego Identity Status and Family Environment
The study reported here investigated the relationship between individuals' perceptions of their families' functioning and of their own emerging identity. Individuation from the parents is closely intertwined with identity formation; families supportive of young people's separation and individuation more often have identity-achieved young people. 83 college students responded to an assessment of their perceptions of their families in 10 areas rela…
Statutory emancipation of minors
Interviews with 18 adolescents who petitioned for emancipation under a California statute revealed that the decision to seek emancipation was often based on the concerns of adult family members, and that those adults sometimes facilitated the actual legal process. The study also revealed that the statute's prerequisites for emancipation were frequently not fulfilled
Sex-Role Orientation, Self-Esteem, and Uniqueness
72 college students took the Personal Attributes Questionnaire, the five-scale Offer Self-image Questionnaire, and the Need for Uniqueness scale. Differences in self-esteem and uniqueness scores among undifferentiated, feminine, masculine, and androgynous individuals were determined. The analysis showed that androgynous and masculine individuals had generally better self-esteem than feminine and undifferentiated individuals. There were sex differ…
Anxiety about a Stranger in Relation to the Mother-Infant Relationship
10 male and 12 female 9-mo.-old infants were observed with their mothers in a laboratory situation that included a stranger's approach, an interview, and a problem to solve. No sex differences in average reaction to a stranger were noted. The pattern of correlates which predicted the infants' reactions to a stranger differed for the two sexes. Mothers who centered their attention on and responded to their girls had girls who reacted more positive…
The Effect of Affective Labeling of Response Items on Paired-Associates Learning
A rationale was sought for the general result that adult subjects find hostile words more difficult to learn than neutral words. A paired-associates task was constructed, and as responses nonsense syllables were used which had previously been experimentally associated with affectively significant adjectives. Three sets of three syllables each were created. One set consisted of syllables previously associated with “hostile” adjectives, one set con…
