  • The Learnability and Acquisition of the Dative Alternation in English

Jess Gropen, Steven Pinker et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1989•Cited by: 23

The dative alternation poses a learnability paradox: when children hear give money to him and give him money , they could formulate a rule deriving the double object from the prepositional form, but the rule would allow overgeneralization from donate money to him to donate him money. Children are not corrected for speaking ungrammatically, so how do they avoid overgeneralizing? The ‘conservatism’ hypothesis proposes that children do not generaliz…

  • Twin growth

    Open Access•Ronald S Wilson•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1979

Height and weight measurements for a large sample of twins from birth to nine years were used to construct growth curves for this period. Compared to singletons, twins were substantially smaller at birth, particularly for weight (30% deficit), but the latter showed a dramatic recovery in the first 3 months, then smaller increments until finally reaching the singleton norms at 8 years. Height, while less depressed at birth (17% deficit), was also …

  • Concordance in physical growth for monozygotic and dizygotic twins

    Open Access•Ronald S Wilson•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1976

Heights and weights were analysed for 636 twins who had been repeatedly measured from birth to 4 years. MZ twins were less concordant for birth weight than DZ twins, principally as a result of a few MZ pairs who exhibited very large differences. By one year of age, however, MZ twins had become more concordant for weight (Rmz = 0-87) while DZ twins moved further apart (Rdz = 0-55). For height, at birth, the MZ correlation was 0-58 while the DZ cor…

  • Twins with academic learning problems

Adam P Matheny, Anne Brown Dolan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1976•References: 6

Developmental histories of 46 children experiencing academic difficulties, all of whom had participated since birth in a longitudinal study of twins, were compared with a matched control group of twins. Genetic influences on the liability for academic difficulties are suggested, since identical pairs were more likely than fraternal pairs to be concordant both for academic difficulties and for preschool behavioral characteristics specific to the i…

  • Twins

    Ronald S Wilson•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1975•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Cognitive patterning and development was appraised for 142 pairs of twins at 4, 5, and 6 years of age, based on their test scores on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Compared with the singleton norms, the twins showed an initial lag at age 4, with Verbal IQ being somewhat more depressed than Performance IQ, By age 6, however, the twins had fully recovered their deficit on both scales and reached parity with singletons. Mo…

  • Growth standards for twins from birth to four years

    Open Access•Ronald S Wilson•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1974

Growth standards for twins are presented for weight, height, and head circumference, based on a sample repeatedly measured from birth to four years of age. The results give the means, SDs, and selected centiles for the size attained at each age, the amount of gain between ages, and the size differences within twin pairs. Sex differences in growth rate were evident at several ages; males grew more rapidly during the first 6 months, whereas females…

  • Twins

    Open Access•Ronald S Wilson•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1974

Means, standard deviations, and empirical centile values are given for birth weight, length and head circumference for twins born at gestational ages 31+ to 42+ weeks. The data are compared with recent results for singletons, and the twins show a deficit that becomes greater as gestational age increases. Although weight may be slightly more affected than the other two measures, the relative growth suppression for twins is quite similar in all thr…
