Suicide Deaths With Opioid Poisoning in the United States
Objectives. To describe trends in suicides with opioid poisoning noted as a contributing cause of death. Methods. Using National Vital Statistics data (1999–2014), we calculated age-adjusted rates of suicide with opioid poisoning (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes T40.0–T40.4) per 100 000 population per year and annual percentage change (APC) in rates. We used Joinpoint regression to examine trends in suicide rates an…
Beliefs About Depression and Depression Treatment Among Depressed Veterans
INTRODUCTION: Because of the misunderstanding and stigmatization of mental health disorders and treatment, health beliefs may be important in treatment seeking for depression. It is important to understand patients' beliefs about mental health disorders and mental health treatment to improve systems of care. METHODS: We studied beliefs about depression and depression treatment among patients in a randomized trial of a chronic care intervention to…
Racial and Ethnic Differences in the Mental Health Problems and Use of Mental Health Care
OBJECTIVES: We compared rates of mental health problems and use of mental health care across multiple racial and ethnic groups using secondary data from a large, nationally representative survey. METHODS: We pooled cross-sectional data from the 2001-2003 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health. Our sample included 134,875 adults classified as white, African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, Mexican, Central and South American, Puer…
Clinician Screening and Treatment of Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Problems in Primary Care
OBJECTIVE: We sought to estimate national rates of screening and treatment of alcohol, drug, and mental (ADM) problems in primary care. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional survey administered from 1997 to 1998. PARTICIPANTS: Our study included a nationally representative household probability sample of 7301 primary care patients. MEASUREMENT: We used patient self-reports from a telephone survey to estimate rates of screening and treatment of commo…
Racial and Gender Variation in Use of Diagnostic Colonic Procedures in the Michigan Medicare Population
BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence that screening programs can alter the natural history of colorectal cancer, a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in the US. Understanding how the technology to diagnose colonic diseases is utilized in the population provides insight into both the access and processes of care. METHOD: Using Medicare Part B billing files from the state of Michigan from 1986 to 1989 we identified all procedures us…
The use of outpatient mental health services in the United States and Ontario
OBJECTIVES: This study compared the associations of individual mental health disorders, self-rated mental health, disability, and perceived need for care with the use of outpatient mental health services in the United States and the Canadian province of Ontario. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was employed. Data came from the 1990 US National Comorbidity Survey and the 1990 Mental Health Supplement to the Ontario Health Survey. RESULTS: T…
The epidemiology of co-occurring addictive and mental disorders
General population data from the National Comorbidity Survey are presented on co-occurring DSM-III-R addictive and mental disorders. Co-occurrence is highly prevalent in the general population and usually due to the association of a primary mental disorder with a secondary addictive disorder. It is associated with a significantly increased probability of treatment, although the finding that fewer than half of cases with 12-month co-occurrence rec…
