Changes in the Organization of Paternal Behavior during Early and Middle Childhood
SYNOPSISObjective. The focus of this study is on changes in the strength of relations among four types of paternal behaviors (supportive presence, respect for autonomy, stimulation, and hostility) from early childhood through middle childhood. Assessing the home environment during mid- and late-adolescence
The late adolescence version of the HOME Inventory (LA-HOME) documents actions, objects, events, and conditions connected with the home environment of children ages 16 and older still living at home. The study entailed a multi-stage process of measurement construction and validation that involved over 400 families from four states. The families were diverse by family composition, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Findings indicated expect…
Promoting resilience through neurocognitive functioning in youth living with HIV
Using a phased model of intervention development, we developed an intervention to promote resilience in youth living with HIV via improved neurocognitive resources. First, youth completed a naturalistic prospective memory (PM) task and were randomized into a visualization condition or control condition. Next, 47 of these participants completed another naturalistic PM task and were randomized into Calendaring condition, an Alarm condition, a Combi…
Ebb and Flow in Parent-Child Interactions: Shifts from Early through Middle Childhood
There are clear shifts in the strength of relations between some parenting behaviors and child behaviors from early to middle childhood, indicative of a changing dialectic as children become more independent and different dialectics for mothers and fathers. Parenting behavior links to child competence and adaptive behavior, and the findings may help resolve some uncertainties about relations between parental behavior and children's developmental …

Data from the New Immigrant Survey were used to describe the home environments of 638 children ages birth to 3 years whose parents legally immigrated to the United States. Thirty‐two indicators of home conditions were clustered into four domains: discipline and socioemotional in support, learning materials, enriching experiences, and family activities. Results revealed variation in how frequently infants from every country (Mexico, El Salvador, I…
Drug endangered children: Examining children removed from methamphetamine laboratories
Who are the fathers in healthy families Arizona? An examination of father data in at‐risk families
Despite substantial research documenting the importance of father-child relations, little is known about fathers in families considered at risk for child abuse, and this lack of information makes adequate targeting of fathers in interventions challenging. This research aims to provide information that will aid interventions in targeting fathers and addressing father-related family issues through: (a) providing descriptive information regarding fa…
