We draw on a community-based participatory research approach that begins with community concerns, includes shared duties across the research process, and collaborative interpretation of results. • Role of Sediments in Insecticide Runoff from Urban Surfaces

Open Access•Angela Gorgoglione, Fabián A Bombardelli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Insecticides, such as pyrethroids, have frequently been detected in runoff from urban areas, and their offsite transport can cause aquatic toxicity in urban streams and estuaries. To better understand the wash-off process of pesticide residues in urban runoff, the association of pyrethroids with sediment in runoff from residential surfaces was investigated in two watersheds located in Northern California (Sacramento County). Rainfall, flow rate, …

  • Measuring Submicron-Size Fractionated Particulate Matter on Aluminum Impactor Disks

    Open Access•Bruce A Buchholz, Paula Zermeño et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•References: 15

Submicron-sized airborne particulate matter (PM) is not collected well on regular quartz or glass fiber filter papers. We used a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) to fractionate PM into 6 size fractions and deposit it on specially designed high-purity thin aluminum disks. The MOUDI separated PM into fractions 56–100, 100–180, 180–320, 320–560, 560–1000, and 1000–1800 nm. Since the MOUDI has a low flow rate (30 L/min), it takes severa…

  • Paradigm for Pluralism

    A Irving, T Young et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work•2002•Cited by: 14•References: 1

This article explores the work of the literary and cultural theorist and philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin and acknowledges him as a new voice to social work. In a larger context the authors argue that his ideas can help the profession negotiate the tricky and unsettling transition from modernity to postmodernity. In particular the authors explore two of his key concepts-dialogue and carnival-and suggest that they offer creative and innovative ways to …

    Thomas M Young•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In this article, environmental modification within the psychosocial tradition of clinical social work is reexamined. Selected constructs from Heinz Kohut's self psychology, in particular his ideas regarding the significance of "self-selfobject" experiences for development and functioning, are set forth and applied to person-environment transactions. Implications are discussed for clinical social work with preadolescent and adolescent children and…

  • Therapeutic case advocacy

    Thomas M Young•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1990

A model for the creation of a system of care for emotionally handicapped children and their families is presented. The model delineates a framework for modifying environments and for identifying the clinical skills necessary to do so. Coordination of the efforts of both formal organizations and natural support systems is seen as an essential component of the proposed system

  • Residential Group Care for Children Considered Emotionally Disturbed, 1966-1981

Thomas M Young, Martha Morrison Dore et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1988•Cited by: 2

Trends in the organized provision of residential group care for children considered emotionally disturbed are identified in data collected by two national surveys carried out 15 years apart, in 1966 and in 1981. Major findings include a marked increase in the use of this form of care and a shift toward the use of smaller facilities for briefer periods of time. Competing alternative explanations for these and for other changes over time, observed …
