Hallucinations and Delusions Signal Alzheimer’s Associated Cognitive Dysfunction More Strongly Compared to Other Neuropsychiatric Symptoms
Psychotic symptoms most strongly indexed DAT-associated cognitive dysfunction, whereas other NPS, such as depression and anxiety, were not as precisely related to the DAT-associated cognitive dysfunction
Statistical Model of Dynamic Markers of the Alzheimer’s Pathological Cascade
Our statistically derived models of the AD pathological cascade are consistent with existing theoretical models
The Enduring Impact of Maladaptive Personality Traits on Relationship Quality and Health in Later Life
Over the past 5 years, the S t. L ouis Personality and A ging N etwork ( SPAN ) has been collecting data on personality in later life with an emphasis on maladaptive personality, social integration, and health outcomes in a representative sample of 1,630 adults aged 55–64 living in the S t. L ouis area. This program has confirmed the importance of considering both the normal range of personality and in particular the role of maladaptive traits in…
An invariant dimensional liability model of gender differences in mental disorder prevalence
Epidemiological studies of categorical mental disorders consistently report that gender differences exist in many disorder prevalence rates and that disorders are often comorbid. Can a dimensional multivariate liability model be developed to clarify how gender impacts diverse, comorbid mental disorders? We pursued this possibility in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC; N = 43,093). Gender differences in pr…
Revising the personality disorder diagnostic criteria for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders–Fifth Edition (DSM-V)
The categorical measurement approach implemented by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) personality disorder (PD) diagnostic system is theoretically and pragmatically limited. As a result, many prominent psychologists now advocate for a shift away from this approach in favor of more conceptually sound dimensional measurement. This shift is expected to improve the psychometric properties of the persona…
Personality Change Precedes Clinical Diagnosis of Dementia of the Alzheimer Type
We examined personality changes reported by a collateral source on the Blessed Dementia Scale in people who were nondemented when they entered a longitudinal study. Of the 108 participants examined here, 68 received a clinical diagnosis of dementia at some point after entry into the study. The other 40 participants died and came to autopsy with a clinical diagnosis of no dementia; however, 14 received a neuropathological diagnosis of Alzheimer's …
