Open Access•S V Shnaider, Svetlana Shnaider et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This study focuses on the analysis of M2 and M3 ovicaprine teeth using ZooMS and stable isotope methods. The samples were derived from the Neolithic site of Jeitun (Turkmenistan), one of the key centers of early agriculture in Central Asia. Using the ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry) technique, 14 ovicaprine tooth samples collected during the excavations conducted by V.M. Masson and D. Harris in 1989–1990 were taxonomically identified t…

Horses began to feature prominently in funerary contexts in southern Siberia in the mid-second millennium BC, yet little is known about the use of these animals prior to the emergence of vibrant horse-riding groups in the first millennium BC. Here, the authors present the results of excavations at the late-ninth-century BC tomb of Tunnug 1 in Tuva, where the deposition of the remains of at least 18 horses and one human is reminiscent of sacrifici…

The settlement of Artyushchenko–1 has been studied by the Bosporus expedition of the Institute for the History of Material Culture since 1998. During this time, a huge amount of material has been accumulated that characterizes various aspects of the life of its population. The settlement existed intermittently for almost 900 years: the archaic period (the last third of the 6th — the first third of the 5th centuries BC), the classical (mid-4th cen…

  • The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes

Open Access•Pablo Librado, Naveed Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2021

Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…

The study of ancient settlements in Eastern Crimea is of great scientific importance. In 2017, Ivanovka Severnaya settlement was studied on the route of the Kerch - Feodosia highway under construction. Here, a series of pits was excavated, dating to the middle of the 4th - beginning of the 3rd centuries BC. Excavations most likely affected the outskirts of the ancient settlement. The osteological materials are very interesting. They are represent…

The Zhokhov site is one of the northern most archaeological sites in the world and a very ancient vestige of occupation of high latitudes by people, indicating that this territory was settled as early as about 8000 years ago. Investigation of the site began in 1989–1990 and then continued in 2000–2005.
