  • Early detection of risk of reading difficulties using a working memory assessment battery

    Open Access•Susan J Atkinson, Colin R Martins et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2022•References: 67

Research suggests a role for aspects of the working memory system in reading. While much of the evidence points to a role for working memory capacity and the phonological loop, more recent work indicates a role for the central executive component, although findings remain unclear. There is an identified need for a reliable screening measure for risk of reading difficulties in children who are pre‐readers. Recent research suggests that working mem…

  • Alcohol Consumption during the Covid-19 Lockdown Period

Open Access•John Foster, Colin R Martins et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

During the COVID-19 pandemic, alcohol consumption was largely confined to drinking in the home. There has been little research examining variables associated with risk in home drinking. The study employed an online survey of ( n = 1128) individuals who had been recruited for their face recognition skills ( n = 838, 70.9% females, mean age 45.05 (12.3 SD)). The main dependent variables were three different AUDIT-C cut-off scores for at-risk drinki…

  • Psychometric properties of the birth satisfaction scale-revised (BSS-R) in a sample of postpartum Iranian women

Forough Mortazavi, Maryam Mehrabadi et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2020

Childbirth satisfaction may positively affect maternal intention to have a future pregnancy and preference to have a cesarean. We translate the UK-Birth-Satisfaction-Scale-Revised (UK-BSS-R) into Persian and validate an Iranian-BSS-R for future use in this population. In total, 784 mothers who were hospitalized in postpartum wards completed the Persian version of the BSS-R. The confirmatory factor analysis on 10-items scale confirmed the conventi…

  • Resilience

    Open Access•Colin R Martins, Colin R Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Multicultural Education•2015

Purpose – This paper aims to look at some of the evidence that supports the construct of resilience and the operationalisation of the “phenomena” of resilience within contemporary society. The concept of resilience has become an influential and society-wide construct, embraced by the positive psychology movement and impacting on educational, health and social policy significantly and demonstrably. Importantly, the concept of resilience has a subs…

  • Comprehensive guide to autism

Colin R Martin, Victor R Preedy et al.•BOOK•Comprehensive guide to autism•2014

Autism is a complex multifaceted disorder affecting neurodevelopment during the early years of life and which for many remains throughout adulthood. Inherent features include difficulties or deficits in communication, social interaction and cognition, person-to-person behavioral coordination and recall, to name but a few facets. It impacts on the affected individual, family and in some cases localized communities. The increased prevalence of chil…

  • Phasic influences on psychometric measures during the menstrual cycle

    Open Access•Colin R Martins, Colin R Martin•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1999

Thirty healthy female volunteers with normal menstrual cycles participated in a study to examine the influence of menstrual cycle phase on locus of control (LC) orientation. LC measures were taken on the follicular, luteal and premenstrual phase of the cycle. It was found that menstrual cycle phase had little effect on LC orientation suggesting that previously observed LC differences across the cycle in dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome suff…
