  • Shift-Share Designs: Theory and Inference

Open Access•Rodrigo Adão, Michal Kolesár et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2019

We study inference in shift-share regression designs, such as when a regional outcome is regressed on a weighted average of sectoral shocks, using regional sector shares as weights. We conduct a placebo exercise in which we estimate the effect of a shift-share regressor constructed with randomly generated sectoral shocks on actual labor market outcomes across U.S. commuting zones. Tests based on commonly used standard errors with 5% nominal signi…

  • Innovation in the Global Firm

    L Kamran Bilir, Eduardo Morales•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

How global are the gains from innovation? When firms operate production plants in multiple countries, technological improvements developed in one location may be shared with foreign sites for efficiency gain. We develop a model that accounts for such transfer, and apply it to measure private returns to R&D investment for a panel of U.S. multinationals during 1989{2008. Our estimates indicate that innovation increases performance at firm locations…

  • How Segregated Is Urban Consumption

    Donald R Davis, Jonathan I Dingel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 5

We provide measures of ethnic and racial segregation in urban consumption. Using Yelp reviews, we estimate how spatial and social frictions influence restaurant visits within New York City. Transit time plays a first-order role in consumption choices, so consumption segregation partly reflects residential segregation. Social frictions also affect restaurant choices: individuals are less likely to visit venues in neighborhoods demographically diff…

Open Access•Eduardo Sánchez Morales, Eduardo Morales et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 19

This article covers the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Psychology, Division 45 of the American Psychological Association (APA) in understanding the relationship of ethnic minority psychological associations with Division 17. A brief history is provided, followed by current status and resources, connections to counseling psychology, and implications for Division 17 for the future of Division 45. Like Division 17, Division 4…

  • Sedimentary record of late-Holocene relative sea-level change and tectonic deformation from the Guerrero Seismic Gap, Mexican Pacific Coast

    Open Access•María Teresa Ramírez‐Herrera, M Teresa Ramirez-Herrera et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Studies of the coastal sedimentary record have allowed both the reconstruction of relative sea-level changes and the determination of local rates and magnitudes of tectonic deformation, particularly in tectonically active areas. Despite their successful use elsewhere, studies of this type are much less common for the Mexican Pacific coast, which parallels the Cocos-North America subduction plate boundary. Stratigraphic, geochemical and microfossi…

  • Heroin and HIV risk in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Youth hangouts, mageto and injecting practices

    Eduardo Morales, S A McCurdy et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2005

HIV risk through needle sharing is now an emerging phenomenon in Africa. This article describes the practices that heroin users are producing as they establish the rules and organization surrounding their drug use. Their practices and interactions reveal the ways that they become initiated into its use, how they progress to injecting, and the important role of local neighbourhood hangouts in facilitating this process. Their practices, interaction…

  • Self-efficacy and HIV-related risk behaviors among multiethnic adolescents

    Ellen L Faryna, Eduardo Morales•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2000•Cited by: 8•References: 7

A cross-sectional correlational design was used to investigate (a) self-efficacy and risk behaviors related to HIV; (b) the comparative predictiveness of self-efficacy and knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs regarding sexual activity and substance use; and (c) possible risk profiles for HIV among adolescents. High school students (N = 427), ranging in age from 12 to 20 years and attending Family Life Education classes in Alameda, California, volunt…
