  • Reflections on the State of the World

Mathilde Fasting, Daniel Núñez et al.•ARTICLE•Current History•2026

If the world is in a moment of upheaval, what that upheaval looks and feels like depends a lot on where you are. In this collection of Dispatches, we invited writers, scholars, and thinkers from Oslo, Guatemala City, Cape Town, Canberra, Moscow, Chennai, and Jerusalem to reflect on what the state of the world looks like from where they are sitting. What are the most defining issues? What is the mood where you live? And what might the future hold

  • Between Narratives of Solidarity and Othering in Indo-Tibetan Borderlands

    K Gupta, S K Gupta•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2024•References: 7

Tibetan refugee rehabilitation in Arunachal Pradesh, India, has become a site of contention, with strident local identity narratives agitating against refugee presence in this Himalayan borderland state. This paper maps the processes of state-making, citizenship and identity that produce a collision between encompassing notions of citizenship/identity and territorialized discourses of belonging premised on ethnicity in the West Kameng and Tawang …

  • Disciplining Statelessness

    Madhura Balasubramaniam, S K Gupta•ARTICLE•Asian Studies Review•2021•References: 18

Tibetan settlements in India house the largest population of Tibetan exiles and are crucial repositories of Tibetan culture and nationalism in the political struggle for Tibet. The settlements privilege the moral narrative of statelessness as an integral part of the Tibetan struggle. However, given the precarity of land tenure, these settlements are steadily hollowing out, with an increasing number of Tibetans choosing to migrate out of India. In…

On the eve of Indian Independence, as Britain prepared to devolve the Crown’s treaties with Tibet to the Indian government, the Tibetan government was debating its future treaty relationship with India under the 1914 Simla Convention and associated Indo-Tibetan Trade Regulations. Soon after Indian independence, Tibetan government made an expansive demand for return of Tibetan territory along the McMahon Line and beyond. This led to a long diploma…

  • Enduring liminality

    Sonika Gupta, S K Gupta•ARTICLE•Asian Ethnicity•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 14

This paper examines the location and production of liminality with regard to voting rights of Tibetan exile community in India. Liminality is related here to the legal and bureaucratic ‘inbetweenness’ that characterises and orders the life of the Tibetan exiles in India. Tibetans born in India have been registered as voters in India’s electoral list albeit without an accompanying claim or path to citizenship. The paper argues that these voting ri…

This article analyses strategies of minority education currently in place in Xinjiang in the context of the second generation ethnic policy debate in China. The article argues that the 2009 ethnic riots in Xinjiang coupled with the change of leadership in China has significantly hardened the state’s approach to aggressively promoting Putonghua (standard Chinese). This policy is facing significant structural and political challenges in its impleme…

    Open Access•Sonika Gupta, S K Gupta•ARTICLE•International Studies•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The Taiwan and the South China Sea disputes have seen the application of multi-pronged military, political and economic strategies by China. This became possible with the declining influence of the communist ideology in China's foreign policy and the consequential “thickening of the elite”. It would be erroneous to characterize China's policy as aggressive based on its declaration to reserve its right to use force to resolve these disputes. The t…

These plants were used for the removal of lead and zinc, from their synthetic solutions of single and mixed groups in laboratory conditions in two different seasons (August‐November ‘90 and April‐July ‘91). In both seasons the maximum yield was observed for Spirodela in lead solutions, while in case of zinc solutio…
