Inks of the Bologna Scroll
This study presents the results of the first scientific tests carried out on the inks of the 'Bologna Scroll' (Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna, Rotolo 2). Written c. 1200 in Spain or Provence, the Bologna Scroll is the oldest known surviving complete Torah scroll. Some Jewish sources require that Torah scrolls, which serve a liturgical function, be written using carbon ink to be considered valid for ritual use. The goals of this study were to…
Text-Correcting Qere, Scribal Errors, and Textual Variants in Medieval Hebrew Bible Manuscripts
Standard qere (lit., “it is read”) notes recorded in the margin of medieval Hebrew Bible manuscripts instruct the reader how to read and interpret words in the body of the text, the ketiv (lit., “it is written”). Although some qere notes may appear to correct errors in the ketiv, as a rule the ketiv was meant to be preserved unchanged, with the qere perpetuated in the margin. This study will explore a hitherto overlooked, nonstandard usage of the…
Distinguishing between seemingly identical inks using scanning μXRF and heat maps
This study will present a new approach to distinguishing writing inks that have the same elemental compositions and visual appearances. The approach is based on displaying the intensity of elemental distributions as heat maps that represent data recorded with a scanning μX-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The heat maps present the data so as to facilitate digitally identifying and distinguishing between inks used to produce, correct, and reink two …
Medieval scribal procedures for writing the Tetragrammaton
Some medieval scribes left blank spaces for the Tetragrammaton in Torah scrolls, to be filled in during a second stage of writing. Medieval rabbinic literature gives various reasons for delaying the writing of the divine name: the scribe was distracted or needed ritual immersion, or the absence of a prayer quorum. An early antecedent to this practice is found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The practice is then anticipated in a baraita , which refers to…
Plotting conflict in Florence 1300
In June 1300, a procession in honour of Florence's patron saint, San Giovanni, was assaulted by a group of eminent Florentines. For Dino Compagni, the attack was an attempted coup organized by Cardinal Matteo d’Acquasparta, papal legate and former general of the Franciscans, and the Black Guelfs. Compagni, however, is the only chronicler to mention it. Nevertheless, his account of the conflict in 1300 shares in common with Giovanni Villani's Nuov…
The murder of Buondelmonte
In 1215 a young nobleman was murdered in a vendetta at the foot of the Ponte Vecchio. The tale captured the Florentine imagination and the place of his death was immortalised. In the first half of the fourteenth century, however, the tale undergoes a number of subtle changes in the chronicles of Pseudo‐Latini, Dino Compagni, and Giovanni Villani. These changes altered the meanings of the story and, consequently, affected the values tied to the pl…
Problems associated with collecting drinking water quality data for community studies
This paper discusses methodology in developing exposure data for the water supply contaminant dibromochloropropane (DBCP) in Fresno County, California. There are 532 drinking water systems (49 large and 483 small) within Fresno County plus 14,000 private wells. We determined the number of wells per system, the output per well, and the population served by each system. The task of deriving water quality estimates for each census tract was complica…
An epidemiologic investigation of the relationship between DBCP contamination in drinking water and birth rates in Fresno County, California
This report describes an epidemiologic investigation of the relationship between DBCP (dibromochloropropane) contamination in drinking water and birth rates between 1978 and 1982 in Fresno County, California. Census tracts in the county were categorized according to DBCP level in their drinking water. Standardized birth ratios and relative birth ratios (adjusted for age, race, per cent Hispanic, and parity) were calculated for these census tracts…
