Civic morality and the problem of the local in histories of the American and French Revolutions in Charlottesville, Virginia and Besançon in Franche‐Comté, France
This essay examines the place of local history of the American and French Revolutions in historiography and civic community. It suggests that grounding revolutionary memory in specific communities offers opportunities for democratic engagement but also risks fragmenting national narratives.
