    Open Access•Concepcion Company Company•ARTICLE•Lexis•2019

The paper analyzes the word indio and the concepts underlying it, in American documents from 1494 to 1905 written in Spanish. The paper examines the syntax, the semantics and the contexts in which indio appears, to shed light on the relationships between indio and other actors of the American society, like espaol, and to shed light on the conceptual changes along 400 years. The paper analyzes various independent syntactic and semantic variables; …

  • Grammatical Words and Spreading of Contexts: Evidence from the Spanish Preposition a

    Open Access•Company, Company Company et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2019•References: 17

The paper shows that when grammatical words are involved, context is then the unit of language change. Certain changes consist in an active spreading of a form to new contexts, without changing the category or grammatical status of the form; in these cases, context must be considered the unit of language change. The empirical evidence is the diachrony of the Spanish preposition a ‘to’. Throughout history, this preposition pervasively extended to …

  • The directionality of grammaticalization in Spanish

Concepcion Company Company•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Pragmatics•2008

The paper examines three directions of grammaticalization by subjectification. Using the general cline Grammar > Discourse and Discourse > Grammar or Grammar ↔ Discourse, Spanish shows three types of diachronic subjectification, going in three different directions: (1) Grammar > Grammar; (2) Grammar > Discourse; (3) Grammar > Discourse > and again Grammar. Directions 1 and 2 are well known; direction 3, as far as I know, is unknown in the literat…

  • Frecuencia de uso y contacto lingüístico en sintaxis: Artículo indefinido + posesivo en el español americano

    Concepcion Company Company•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2005

Este trabajo examina los problemas teóricos y metodológicos con que se enfrenta cualquier análisis que intente comprobar contacto o interferencia lingüística en el nivel sintáctico de la lengua, y plantea que el examen minucioso de las frecuencias relativas de uso de las construcciones en contextos específicos es una herramienta metodológica básica para valorar adecuadamente esos problemas. El problema teórico específico es cómo valorar formas qu…

  • Multiple dative-marking grammaticalization: Spanish as a special kind of primary object language

    Concepcion Company Company•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2001

The aim of this paper is to provide some diachronic evidence of how a language acquires primary object properties, and to shed some light on the disputable status of dative expressions (Dats) in two object constructions. Spanish having in its origin two object case-markings, one for the Acc-patient and one for the Dat-recipient, has been progressively acquiring only one object case-marking. This language would have been sliding from a DO–IO langu…

  • The Interplay Between form and Meaning in Language Change: Grammaticalization of Cannibalistic Datives in Spanish

    Concepcion Company Company•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•1998

The paper tries to show that in changes of multiple causation, meaning is a leading factor in determining the syntactic output. Although formal and semantic-pragmatic factors converge in a complementary way, they carry different weights: formal factors lay the seed for the innovative construction and the semantic-pragmatic ones act as the ultimate trigger of the change. A set of three multilevel changes in Spanish is examined; in all of them accu…
