  • Le Dimanche, une histoire

    Open Access•M Greengrass•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2016

The Sabbath has not been a day of rest for French historians in recent years. Rather, it has been the subject of research and debate, heated by the spotlight focused upon it by debates around the neo-liberal loosening of Sunday trading regulations in France. Jean-François Barrielle’s Quand dimanche était un jour de fête (1982) was just the first to present a somewhat rosy picture of the republican Sunday, incarnated in France by the law of 13 Jul…

  • La Memoire des Guerres de Religion II. Enjeux historiques, enjeux politiques, 1760-1830

    M Greengrass•ARTICLE•French History•2012

This collection succeeds its predecessor volume (La Mémoire des Guerres de Religion : la concurrence des genres historiques, XVIe-XVIIIe siècles, 2007), taking forward the reworking of the memory of the Wars of Religion into French literary, dramatic and visual culture from the beginning of the eighteenth century through the Revolution to the July Monarchy. Its editors have succeeded admirably in integrating its 17 contributions into a coherent v…

  • Une histoire de la memoire judiciaire

    M Greengrass•ARTICLE•French History•2012

This volume brings together 23 contributions around the important theme of judicial memory. The latter is defined not simply as the construction of a written record from judicial process, but the ways in which it is stored, catalogued, and reutilised to become the silent force that shapes and empowers judicial institutions. The volume has an impressively broad chronological range (from the cuneiform clay tablets of ancient Mesopotamia as a privat…

  • Robin Briggs--Historian

    David Parrott, M Greengrass et al.•ARTICLE•French History•2011

In June 2009 a group of present and past students and colleagues of Robin Briggs gathered in Oxford for a conference to celebrate his contribution to early modern history. A series of papers paid tribute, in their diversity of themes and historical approaches, to the range and distinctiveness of Robin Briggs’ historical interests and his influence on a large community of scholars. A selection of these papers are published in this issue of French …

  • The Anatomy of a Religious Riot in Toulouse in May 1562

    Open Access•M Greengrass•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1983•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The five days of municipal insurrection in Toulouse from 13 to 17 May 1562 were critical ones for the city's Protestants. The Huguenots attempted to seize control of the city in a coup which failed on a grand scale. Two hundred Protestants may have died in the street fighting alone; over two hundred were executed after the rising had been suppressed and at least as many again were hanged in effigy. In all, over a thousand suspects were investigat…
