Foucault et l'autoréflexion moderne
Schizophrenic Person' or `Person with Schizophrenia'
Most contemporary experts and mental health advocates would reject the term `schizophrenic', whether used as noun or adjective. The terminology they prefer—`person with schizophrenia'—seems safely to nominalize the ailment and set it apart from the afflicted person, treating the disease entity as a foreign body. The present essay does not advocate rejecting the current terminology. It offers a critical perspective on the contemporary consensus by…

Mind, Self and Psychopathology
The past decade has seen a significant rapprochement between philosophy and the study of psychopathology in the English-speaking world. There is encouraging evidence of genuine dialogue: many philosophers, psychiatrists and psychologists are interested not only in how recent philosophical work on mind and self can increase our understanding of anomalous and paradoxical aspects of various disorders, but also in the ways these disorders challenge t…
Analyzing and Deconstructing Psychopathology
This review discusses two books. Philosophical Psychopathology is an anthology of articles by philosophers in the Anglo-American philosophical tradition who address themselves to a disparate assortment of topics—including schizophrenia, MPD, autism, blindsight, diagnostic classification and the problem of despair. In general, the articles display admirable conceptual rigor, but are often accompanied by a distant and rather abstract grasp of psych…

Behaviorism and Existentialism Revisited
Some of the ontological and epistemological underpinnings of behavioral and existential systems of psychology were examined with the aim of elucidating neglected parallels and affinities between them. The philosophical presuppositions of both behaviorism and existentialism share an inclination toward nominalism and an opposition to subjectivism. Both orientations view action in the world as the basic material out of which any conceptualization of…
Psychoanalysis and the Hermeneutic Turn
Through a discussion of Donald Spence's Narrative Truth and Historical Truth, a critical introduction to the hermeneutic or interpretive perspective is presented. Spence's book has generally been assumed to offer a hermeneutic reformulation of psychoanalysis. However, its presuppositions are incompatible with fundamental tenets of contemporary hermeneutic thought, as expressed in the philosophies of Heidegger, Gadamer, and the later Wittgenstein.…
Introspection, Schizophrenia, and the Fragmentation of Self
When I am melting I have no hands, I go into a doorway in order not to be trampled on. Everything is flying away from me. In the doorway I can gather together the pieces of my body. It is as if something is thrown in me, bursts me asunder. Why do I divide myself in different pieces? I feel that I am without poise, that my personality is melting and that my ego disappears and that I do not exist anymore. Everything pulls me apart.... The skin is t…
