  • Compassion with Justice: Harari’s Assault on Human Rights

    Open Access•Michael W Martins, Mike W Martin•ARTICLE•The Southern Journal of Philosophy•2020

Yuval Noah Harari contends that human rights are an outdated myth. He calls for replacing them with a new global ethic to meet crises as varied as environmental destruction, disruptive technologies, and extreme gaps between rich and poor. Toward that end, he outlines an ethics that exalts compassion and elides justice, an ethics that animates his trilogy: Sapiens , Homo Deus , and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century . I draw together the key elements…

  • Albert Schweitzer's Reverence for Life: Ethical Idealism and Self-Realization

    Mike W Martin•BOOK•Albert Schweitzer's Reverence for…•2016

Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, physician, Nobel Peace Laureate, theologian, and musician, developed a character-oriented ethics focused on self-realization, nature-centered spirituality, and moral idealism which anticipated the current renaissance of virtue ethics. Schweitzer's idea of 'reverence for life' underscores the contribution of moral ideals to self-realization, connects ethics to spirituality without religious dogma, and outlines a pio…

    Open Access•Michael W Martins, Mike W Martin•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Positive psychologists aspire to study the moral virtues, as well as positive emotions, while retaining scientific objectivity. Within this framework, Martin Seligman, a founder of positive psychology, offers an empirically‐based argument for an ancient and venerable theme: happiness can be increased by exercising the virtues. Seligman's project is promising, but it needs to pay greater attention to several methodological matters: (1) greater car…

  • Alcoholism as Sickness and Wrongdoing

    Open Access•Michael W Martins, Mike W Martin•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•1999

It is now commonplace to call persons sick when their wrongdoing becomes entrenched, extensive, and extreme. This mixing of moral and therapeutic categories seems incoherent if we uncritically embrace a morality‐therapy dichotomy: Behavioral problems like alcoholism are either moral or therapeutic matters, but not both. This paper dissolves the dichotomy by arguing that chronically abusive drinking is simultaneously a sickness and wrongdoing. Alc…

  • Love's Constancy

    Open Access•Michael W Martins, Mike W Martin•ARTICLE•Philosophy•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Marital faithfulness’ refers to faithful love for a spouse or lover to whom one is committed, rather than the narrower idea of sexual fidelity. The distinction is clearly marked in traditional wedding vows. A commitment to love faithfully is central: ‘to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part... and thereto I plight [pledge] thee…

  • Self-Deception and Morality

André Gombay, Michael W Martins et al.•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Review•1988•Cited by: 1

This book systematically explores the moral issues surrounding self-deception. While many articles and books have been written on the concept of self-deception in recent years, Martin's gives much greater emphasis to self-deception as a significant topic for both ethical theory and applied ethics. Self-deception is . . . perplexing from a moral point of view. It seems tailor-made to camouflage and foster immorality. . . . Does all self-deception …
