Vietnam
Are the issues of civil society, “good governance”, and the role of NGOs in Vietnam part of a discursive discourse that is linked to a growing development industry in which development studies and economics dominate? Kleinen questions these issues based upon longitudinal research in Vietnam since the early 1990s. In this study, an effort is made to explain the concrete interactions between authorities of the Vietnamese one-party state and its cit…
Nguyễn Văn Khoan (1890-1975). An Odd Man out of Vietnamese Anthropology
Nguyễn Văn Khoan (1890-1975), an almost forgotten scholar, but still quoted by contemporaries: here is the great enigma of a man forgotten outside his family, but as an author still present in the scientific literature on Vietnam. This article examines the life and the career of an anthropologist before this term was coined who studied the cultural and spiritual life of the Vietnamese of the Tonkinese delta during the French colonial period. Acco…
The Tragedy of the Margins
This article deals with aspects of official land registers in pre-colonial and colonial Vietnam and their relationship with marginal lands since the eleventh century and especially since the beginning of the nineteenth century. The changing pattern of land ownership and control is studied in detail in one specific village in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. Several practices of land use and land distribution are discussed, as are various …

Tropicality and Topicality
This article discusses the relevance of the work of Pierre Gourou for Vietnamese and non‐Vietnamese scholarship on colonial and postcolonial rural society in Vietnam. The term “tropicality” is used to situate Gourou's work within the framework of both French and Vietnamese regimes of truth. It is argued that Gourou was aware of the complex human geographies of the tropics and monsoon Asia and the challenges this posed to both Western and “tropica…
Roots of the Sino-Vietnamese Conflict
I was distressed to read John Kleinen's article "Roots of the Sino-Vietnamese Conflict" (MR, October 1982), but much more distressed that MR would publish it. Monthly Review has had a world-renowned record of support for national liberation movements and attempts to build socialism for over 30 years. I did not expect to find such an article in its pages. I would like to request space for a few comments. This article can also be found at the Monthl…
Roots of the Sino-Vietnamese Conflict
In the course of the U.S. war of aggression against Vietnam, the people's resistance struggle was endowed with enormous symbolic value by sympathetic European and North American observers. Here was the quintessential expression of a just war of national liberation, of revolutionary heroism, and of the ethical superiority of socialism. China, also an Asian socialist country, was hailed in these same quarters as Vietnam's most steadfast supporter i…
