    Open Access•Robyn Driskell, Elizabeth Embry et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2008•Cited by: 46•References: 66

Objective. The relationship between religion and political participation has not been rigorously investigated, typically employing only basic measures of church attendance or denomination. In this study, we utilize precise measures of various religious behaviors, traditions, and beliefs to examine their influence on political participation. Methods. Using data from the Baylor Religion Survey 2005, we demonstrate that merely including measures of …

  • Civic Engagement and Religious Activities: Examining the Influence of Religious Tradition and Participation

    Robyn Driskell, Robyn L Driskell et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•2008•Cited by: 30•References: 58

Typically the relationship between civic engagement and religion has been investigated using only basic measures of religious attendance or denomination. We utilize more detailed indicators of various types of religious participation and a more valid concept of religious traditions to examine the influence on civic engagement, finding that typical measures of religious attendance or denomination camouflage much of religion's influence. We show th…

  • The Professionalization of Faculty at Religious Colleges and Universities

Open Access•James Parker, James T Parker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2007•References: 18

As faculty become defined more by the professional norms of their discipline, the potential for conflict with the faith-based norms of religious colleges and universities should increase. Survey responses from over 1,900 faculty at six religious colleges and universities show that most faculty members support including religious criteria in hiring, contrary to professional, disciplinary norms, but most faculty reject religious constraints on acad…

  • Faculty Attitudes on Integrating Faith and Learning at Religious Colleges and Universities: A Research Note

L Lyons, Larry Lyon et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Religion•2005•Cited by: 1

Reflecting the broader secularization debates, considerable research and disagreement exists over the degree to which religious higher education is distinct from its secular counterpart. One crucial and controversial way in which religious colleges and universities can differ from the secular academy is to integrate faith and learning by including faith-based perspectives in the core curriculum. Faculty surveys from six religious colleges and uni…

  • The quality of community and the quality of life

    Susan Lewis, L Lyons et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•1986•Cited by: 7•References: 13

Most research relating objective indicators of the quality of environment to subjective indicators of the quality of life has failed to find a relationship between the two. This research, by using community data, establishes an association between the local environment and perceived life quality, and in doing so, provides empirical support for focusing on local as welt as national investigations of life quality

  • The National Longitudinal Surveys Data for Labor Market Entry: Evaluating the Small Effects of Racial Discrimination and the Large Effects of Sexual Discrimination

    L Lyons, Larry Lyon et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 29

This paper constructs racially and sexually comparative models of labor market entry to assess the effects of individual differences and labor market discrimination. Traditional measures of racial discrimination in the labor market are of relatively small importance in explaining prestige and income gaps compared to the effect of individual differences. Measures of sexual discrimination, however, are of considerable importance in accounting for t…

  • Community Power and Policy Outputs: The Routines of Local Politics

Open Access•L Lyons, Larry Lyon et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Quarterly•1981

The concern with the effects of different types of community power structures has produced two prominent research and conceptualization strategies—the separability and community mobilization models. When both models are evaluated using the same methods and sample, their predictive validity is disappointing. Examination of the relationship of various policy outputs to different types of leadership arrangements suggests a more basic conceptualizati…

L Lyons, Larry Lyon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1981•Cited by: 12

Attempts to relate community power to policy outputs have been criticized for lacking theoretical relevance and statistical significance. To overcome these criticisms, this research employs a power-policy model based on a political economy framework which utilizes Molotch's conpetion of the community as a growth machine. Analysis of the Permanent Community Sample provides strong power-policy relationships that support the major tenets of the grow…

  • Male Entry into the Labor Force: Estimates of Occupational Rewards and Labor Market Discrimination

    Open Access•L Lyons, Larry Lyon et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1980•References: 8

Causal models of initial occupational rewards for black and white males are developed from the responses of first-year workers in the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience. A comparison of the black and white models shows that while blacks have experienced considerable upward mobility, their income and prestige remain far behind their white counterparts. Two explanations for this racial gap are indicated by the data: (1) blacks…

  • Social Mobility among Young Black and White Men: A Longitudinal Study of Occupational Prestige and Income

    L Lyons, Larry Lyon et al.•ARTICLE•The Pacific Sociological Review•1979•Cited by: 4•References: 13

The National Longitudinal Surveys of young males provides the data for the construction of causal models of occupational mobility for both black and white workers. These NLS data allow several methodological variations from previous occupational mobility research, including longitudinal design, less reliance on retrospective techniques, and a more precise time frame. The annual models indicate that beyond years of education, very few variables av…

  • Do the differences make a difference? an empirical evaluation of the culture of poverty in the United States

    Open Access•Troy Abell, Troy D Abell et al.•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1979•Cited by: 3•References: 18

Causal path models of initial occupational prestige and income for the poor and the middle class (United States) are developed from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience in order to test Lewis's "perpetuation of poverty" hypothesis. All the variables predictive of educational, occupational, and financial achievement also differentiate the lower and middle classes. However, two-thirds of the income gap between the descendant…
