Psychedelic-assisted therapy for death acceptance in terminal illness
Background and Aims Mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and existential distress are common among individuals with terminal illness. Preliminary evidence suggests that death acceptance may protect against these issues, but there is limited research on the role of psychedelic-assisted therapy in fostering death acceptance. This scoping review aims to explore the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapy to promote death acceptanc…
Psychedelic Augmentation of 12-Step Engagement
Amid an evolving psychedelic drug policy landscape and limitations of existing substance use disorder (SUD) treatments, a novel addiction recovery paradigm has emerged involving augmentation of 12-Step program engagement with therapeutic psychedelic use. A preliminary qualitative analysis was initiated to describe this movement by examining real-world experiences of participants in remission from alcohol, opioid, and stimulant use disorders. Betw…
Latent Classes of Lifetime Use of Seven Hallucinogens in the United States
Interest in and use of hallucinogens appears to be growing in the United States, yet less is known about the use of multiple hallucinogens. The aims of this study are to characterize subgroups of lifetime hallucinogen use and to identify sociodemographic correlates of these subgroups. Latent class models were fit using 2021-2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data on a sub-sample of individuals who reported having ever used any ha…

Participant Reports of Mindfulness, Posttraumatic Growth, and Social Connectedness in Psilocybin-Assisted Group Therapy
The primary objective of this qualitative study was to explore the therapeutic trajectories of individuals undergoing psilocybin-assisted group therapy. This interpretive phenomenological analysis focused on an enriched study sample of gay-identified cisgender men ( n = 9) with human immunodeficiency virus diagnosed before 1996 and clinically significant trauma symptoms. Microphenomenological interviews were carried out 1 day after participants’ …
Psychedelic Science, Contemplative Practices, and Indigenous and Other Traditional Knowledge Systems
As individuals and communities around the world confront mounting physical, psychological, and social threats, three complimentary mind-body-spirit pathways toward health, wellbeing, and human flourishing remain underappreciated within conventional practice among the biomedical, public health, and policy communities. This paper reviews literature on psychedelic science, contemplative practices, and Indigenous and other traditional knowledge syste…
Psychedelic Research and Therapeutic Practices
The global prevalence of substance abuse and mental disorders continues to challenge healthcare systems, with one in eight individuals affected. The therapeutic potential of psychedelics is recognized not only for treating mental disorders but also for enhancing well-being and promoting pro-social behaviors. Conventional biomedical research models fall short in addressing the broader health needs of populations and poorly suited for overcoming ba…

Comment and Response
The Journal of Psychoactive Drugs published a case study reporting reduction of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms after consumption of psilocybincontaining mushrooms (Lugo-Radillo & Cortes-Lopez, 2021).We subsequently received a letter suggesting that psychedelic research has progressed beyond case studies, and recommending that journals focus on publication of clinical trials rather than case reports
A Deleuzian reading of Hartshorne’s traditional concept of areal differentiation
Areal differentiation is one of the critical and traditional concepts in geographical studies, reconsidered through the philosophy of Deleuze in the present article. It has been argued that geographical areas should be conceptualised as virtual entities whose source of differentiation rises from their internal force. The paper argues that geographers have access to the virtual entities only in the public words and ideas, tending to naturalise one…
Reconceptualizing the U.S. Military’s Transition Assistance Program
This article describes and proposes the Success in Transition Model as a guiding framework for a reconceptualized Transition Assistance Program (TAP) to support U.S. military members as they leave the service. Key groups of veterans have ongoing difficulties adjusting to civilian settings after their time in the service. Even with recent changes, the current TAP has a narrow focus of primarily aiding members to prepare for finding post-military e…
Psychedelic-Assisted Group Therapy
Violence, addiction, recovery
Informal, coercive residential centers for the treatment of addiction are widespread and growing throughout Latin America. In Mexico these centers are called “ anexos” and they are run and utilized by low-income individuals and families with problems related to drugs and alcohol. This article draws on findings from a 3-year anthropological study of anexos in Mexico City. Participant observation and in-depth interviews were used to describe and an…
High-Impact Political Science Internships in a “Low-Density Opportunity” Environment
Internship placements located away from capital cities and metropolitan areas may lack opportunities for involvement in high-profile issues but they can uphold standards of “high-impact educational practice” (Kuh 2008). This study of 59 political science interns at the Mississippi University for Women demonstrates that high-impact outcomes may be generated in small-city placements that include administrative tasks if students are encouraged to re…

Statement on ayahuasca
Ps
In 2011, PS: Political Science and Politics published articles covering a vast range of topics. The journal's commitment to publishing articles on pedagogy and the profession, as well as exemplary topical scholarship on a spectrum of issues, call for an equally broad stable of reviewers. PS cannot publish such diverse work without the outstanding work (and openmindedness) of our peer reviewers. The peer-review process relies on the professionalis…
Ayahuasca as Antidepressant? Psychedelics and Styles of Reasoning in Psychiatry
There is a growing interest among scientists and the lay public alike in using the South American psychedelic brew, ayahuasca, to treat psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety. Such a practice is controversial due to a style of reasoning within conventional psychiatry that sees psychedelic-induced modified states of consciousness as pathological. This article analyzes the academic literature on ayahuasca's psychological effects to deter…
Agonistic Behavior of Pregnant Female Monkeys ( Macaca Nemestrina )
15 pregnant female monkeys ( Macaca nemestrina) were observed and the frequencies of 14 categories of agonistic behavior were recorded. Predictions of sex of fetus were based on relative frequencies of aggressive and submissive behaviors. Correct predictions were made in 11 of 15 cases (P < .06). The relative aggressiveness of females carrying male fetuses (by contrast with those carrying female fetuses) suggests that the secretion of androgens b…
