  • Jesus of Galilee

    Sean Freyne•ARTICLE•Early Christianity•2010

  • Galilee as Laboratory

    Open Access•Sean Freyne•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2007

This paper discusses ways in which NT scholarship can engage meaningfully with contemporary studies in Greco-Roman culture, using recent archaeological exploration in Galilee as samples of such a strategy. Three examples are discussed, dealing respectively with aspects of Hellenisation, Judaisation and Romanisation of the region. These illustrate how specific finds can be brought into dialogue with the literary evidence, providing fresh readings.…

  • The Geography of Restoration

    Open Access•Sean Freyne•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2001

This paper discusses Galilee–Jerusalem relations in the context of the ‘geography of restoration’ as this is represented in various Jewish writings of the Second Temple period. The literary and archaeological records for the Jewish presence in Galilee in the Hasmonean and Herodian periods are examined against this ideology of a greater Israel. Finally, the alleged opposition in early Christianity between Galilee and Jerusalem is judged to be poor…

  • Galilee and Gospel

    Sean Freyne•BOOK•Galilee and Gospel•2000

This collection of essays brings together a number of studies of Galilee in Hellenistic and Roman times. Sean Freyne evaluates the important archaeological work in the Galilee and brings this evidence into a critical dialogue with the literary evidence. The emerging profile of the social and religious world of Galilee has proved highly influential in discussions about the historical Jesus, especially in relation to the matrix of Early Christianit…

  • Galilee

Rafael Frankel, Sean Freyne•CHAPTER•The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary•1992

The northernmost region of the land of Israel. Culturally and historically it is characterized by its close proximity to the coastal cultures of Canaan-Phoenicia on the W and NW and to the inland Syrian-Aramaean cultures on the E and NE. The character and culture of Galilee and its neighbors changed

  • Galileans

Sean Freyne•CHAPTER•The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary•1992

Discussion of the ethnic Strands among the inhabitants of Galilee in Hellenistic-Roman times has often centered on an understanding of Isa 8:23. In that oracle of salvation the three newly established provinces of the Assyrians in the north—the Way of the Sea, the Land of Zebulun and Naphtali, and G

  • Galilee, Sea of (Place)

Sean Freyne•CHAPTER•The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary•1992

The large expanse of water in the Jordan Valley rift which separates Galilee from the Gaulan and Decapolis regions. There is no consistency in the name that is given to it. Terminology In the OT, this lake was called “the sea of Chinnereth” (Heb yām kinneret, cf. Heb kinôr, “lyre[-shaped]”), and it

  • Galilee-Jerusalem Relations According to Josephus' Life

    Open Access•Sean Freyne•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1987

Josephus' Life raises many important literary and historical questions that are not easily resolved. This may explain why, for the most part, it has been ignored by New Testament scholars, despite the fact that it is the only extant writing from the first century that bears directly on Galilean life and culture and was written by somebody with immediate experience of that location. Its tendentious character has been ably exposed by Shaye Cohen's …

  • The Galileans in the light of Josephus' Vita

    Open Access•Sean Freyne•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1980

‘With this limited area, and although surrounded by such powerful foreign nations, the two Galilees have always resisted any hostile invasion, for the inhabitants are from infancy inured to war, and have at all times been numerous; never did the men lack courage or the country men’ ( War 3:41 f.). It is surprising how this general characterization of the Galileans by Josephus has so often found its way into modern writings about Galilee without a…
