    Norman Jackson, Pippa Carter•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This paper reflects on the significations of the ‘mental life’ of the city that are represented by the material symbols on display. In trying to comprehend the public display of fascist era ‘art’ in the city of Trieste, it addresses an example of trying to make sense of the ‘impossible’. Reassured of the contested nature of such displays, the paper reflects further on the power of symbols in fascism and how different countries have addressed thei…

  • A fresh perspective on progress files—a way of representing complex learning and achievement in higher education

Norman Jackson, Rob Ward•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2004

This article addresses the challenge of developing new conceptual knowledge to help us make better sense of the way that higher education is approaching the ‘problem’ of representing (documenting, certifying and communicating by other means) students' learning for the supercomplex world described by Barnett (2000 Barnett R (2000b) Realizing the university in an age of supercomplexity (Buckingham, SRHE and Open University Press) [Google Scholar]b)…

  • Modelling change in a national HE system using the concept of unification

    Norman Jackson, Norman J Jackson•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Education systems can be characterized on the basis of whether the academic and occupational/vocational education and training they provide is compartmentalized (tracked systems), systematically connected (linked systems) or fully integrated (unified systems). This paper describes how such a typology might be used to model strategic change at the higher levels of the UK system for education and training. Successive governments have pursued a numb…

  • Organizational Chiaroscuro

    Open Access•Norman Jackson, Pippa Carter•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Corporate governance describes an apparent attempt by the corporate sector to put its house in order. Relative to a number of notorious examples of illegal or unethical corporate malpractice, corporate governance is seen as a recent, welcome and well-intentioned concern. However, rather than the universal good which it would appear to be, by reference to the work of Foucault corporate governance is disclosed as partial and interested. Far from be…

  • Beyond Epistemology and Reflective Conversation

    Open Access•Norman Jackson, Hugh Willmott•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 12

In response to the current crisis in the philosophy of social science, the proposition has been advanced that "reflective conversation" between researchers offers a way of attaining awareness and understanding of the non-epistemological influences that shape the processes and products of research. The recognition of these (inescapable) sources of bias is said to heighten awareness of the limitations of methodology and has the potential to avoid t…

  • The Attenuating Function of Myth in Human Understanding

    Open Access•Norman Jackson, N V Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Ashby's Law of Requisite Variety demands the insertion of a variety attenuator in any homeostatic system to regulate the relationship between the high variety environment and the low variety monitor. We argue that, in the system which is constituted by man and his environment, this function is performed by myth, i.e., that myth is a variety attenuator. The nature of the concept of myth is explored, and a relationship traced between the functions …
