Perceiving goals as Invariable
Accountability-based education systems have increasingly emphasized performance monitoring through key performance indicators (KPIs), especially after the so-called “PISA shock” in 2001. While such indicators aim to raise standards, they may also lead educators to perceive goals as rigid and non-negotiable—referred to as Perceiving Goals as . (PGI). Despite growing concern, empirical research on the motivational and psychological consequences of …
When LMX-Differentiation Based on Equity is Less Fair
The assumption that a leader's differentiation of resources is effective when based on equity or employees’ performance has received mixed support. Thus, it is critical to increase our understanding of how leaders can differentiate effectively. We do so by investigating the association between leader-member exchange differentiation (LMXD) and interactional justice and whether it depends on the type of resource that is differentiated (socioemotion…
The role of other orientation in reactions to social and economic leader–member exchange relationships
In this study, we investigate, through two study samples, whether relationships between social leader–member exchange (SLMX) and economic leader–member exchange (ELMX) relationships and outcomes differ depending on the followers' level of other orientation or the extent to which they are concerned for the welfare of others. We propose that followers with higher other orientation would respond less negatively to higher levels of ELMX and more posi…

Transactional Leader–Member Exchange Relationships and Followers’ Work Performance
In this study, we test whether leader political skill moderates the relationship between more transactional leader–member exchange (LMX) relationships and follower work performance. A field study was conducted among 753 followers and 153 leaders from several Norwegian business organizations. The results showed that the negative relationship between more transactional LMX relationships and follower work performance was weaker for employees with a …
The Destructiveness of Laissez-Faire Leadership Behavior
This study examined the mediating role of economic leader–member exchange (ELMX) on the negative associations between laissez-faire leadership and affective commitment, self-reported work effort, and self-reported organizational citizenship behavior. Two samples were used. Study 1 consisted of 199 employees from an international high-technology manufacturing organization. Study 2 consisted of 197 employees from an international private security f…
Do military decision makers behave as predicted by prospect theory
Four experiments were conducted to explore the robustness of risky choice framing among military decision makers. In the first experiment the original version of the Asian disease problem was administered. In contrast to Tversky and Kahneman's ( 1981 ) original findings, military decision makers were not influenced by the gain and loss framing. They demonstrated risk‐seeking behavior in both domains. In the second experiment, we administered a mi…
Work performance, affective commitment, and work motivation
The purpose of this study was to investigate employee attitudes and behaviors among knowledge workers under different forms of pay administration and pay levels. To examine these issues, I collected data from two business units in a large Norwegian multinational company with pay plans combining individual and collective performance and behaviors as the foundations for individual bonuses; one with two collective components (profit and behavior of …
Impact of mood, framing, and need for cognition on decision makers' recall and confidence
This study examined the impact of mood, information framing, and need for cognition on participants' amount of recall and level of confidence in a simulated business‐decision‐making setting. No main effect was obtained for either positive or negative mood. However, in support of the congruity–incongruity hypothesis, participants who received mood‐congruent framing information (positive mood/positive framing and negative mood/negative framing) sho…
