This contribution deals with the famous stela of king Dāduša of Ešnunna ( c . eighteenth century b.c. ). The monument testifies to a correlation of text and image that is unique in the Ancient Near East. Gyges (Gugu) of Lydia
The Lydian ruler Gyges, son of Daskylos, founded the dynasty of the Mermnads. His reign is dated roughly to the second third of the seventh century BCE . He is known both from contemporaneous Assyrian sources (where his name appears as Gugu) and from later Greek literature.
Mita of Mushki
The Phrygian king Midas of Greco‐Roman legend is often identified with one Mitâ, king of Mushki, known from Neo‐Assyrian sources of the late eighth century BCE . Information about Midas in the classical tradition is of dubious historical value.
Deioces
According to classical tradition, Deioces was a Median ruler; the Greek form Deiokes may reflect Iranian *Dahyu‐ka‐, a hypocoristic based on *dahyu‐ “land”.
