Byzantine Illyricum in the 7th–9th centuries
The paper discusses the issue of Byzantine presence in the territory of the prefecture of Illyricum in the Balkan interior after the Slavic-Avar invasion in the early seventh century. It is argued that the Slavic settlement of the Balkan Peninsula was not as thorough as usually assumed, but that there were in the Balkan interior, amidst its general depopulation, sporadic remains of the provincial Roman population of urban culture during the seven…
“Serbian land” in the Tărnovо inscription of John Asen II in the light of the political and geographical terminology of the time
This study examines the notion of friendship depicted in the epistolary corpus of Euthymios Malakes who served as bishop of Neai Patrai during the second half of the twelfth century. His letters do not contain solely references to everyday problems, such as the difficulties that his diocesan floc had to encounter because of the hatred, the rapacity and the insatiable greed of state tax collectors, but they are also considered as vehicles for emot…

It looks at the origin of each bishopric and traces its historical development during the First Bulgarian Empire in 864-971, the Byzantine reoccupation under John I Tzimiskes in 971-976, and Samuel?s Empire in 976-1018
On the inscription on the baptismal font from the time of Prince Viseslav
The paper discusses some epigraphic features of the inscription on the baptismal font of the priest John from the time of Prince Viseslav from the end of the 8th and the beginning of the 9th century and points out the similarities and parallels between it and the inscription of Bishop John of Kotor on the architrave in the Kotor Cathedral of St. Tryphon from 805. Based on them, it is assumed that the baptismal font could also be attributed to the…
On the Albanian ethnonym in the middle ages
The paper discusses the issue of the Albanian ethnonym in the Middle Ages, starting from the fact that today they use the ethnonym Shqipetar for themselves and that other peoples know them as Albanians. It first points out the possibility that the former name was in use among the Albanians already in the 14th century, and then discusses the use of the ethnonym Albanians in the historical sources from the 11th to the 14th century. Since it origina…
On the first marriage of King Milutin
The paper deals with the problem of the first marriage of the Serbian king Stephen Uros II (Milutin), mentioned by the Byzantine author George Pachymeres, with the aim to reinforce the existing thesis that it was a marriage with a Serbian noble Helen, concluded in the 1270-ies, but divorced soon after he came to the Serbian throne in 1282. It also provides an overview of the nature and character of that marriage and the possible reasons why it wa…
The Byzantine Concept of “Syria” as Arab Empire and its Ancient Roots
Through the millennia of its history, the name “Syria” has acquired multiple meanings and has been used for a variety of concepts depending on historical context and circumstances. But the way in which the Byzantine emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus used it in the mid-10th century AD is perhaps the most interesting and remarkable one. At that time, the so-called “Fertile Crescent” was ruled by Muslim Arabs, who deprived the Persians of Meso…

The region of Vagenitia and the bishopric of St. Clement
At the church council in Constantinople in 879/880 there was mentioned for the first and only time the „bishop of Vagenitia“, the area of the Slavic tribe of the Vajunits. On the other hand, the geographical area with that name is mentioned consistently in historical sources between the 7th and the 15th century. This paper analyzes the data on the geographical location of Vagenitia during the Middle Ages and the church organization in its territo…
On the Serbian-Bulgarian border in the 9th and the 10th centuries
The paper analyzes the information concerning the border between the Serbs and the Bulgarians in the 9th and the 10th centuries found in the work De administrando imperio by the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. It is made clear that there were no clearly established borderlines between the political entities in the Early Middle Ages, and that those political entities during that period functioned not on the basis of territorialy organized…
The identity of Diocletians according to the De administrando imperio
The article discusses the issue of ethnic identity of the Diocletians referred to by the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus in his work De administrando imperio. Of all the tribes of the southern part of the eastern Adriatic coast, only for them the emperor fails to point out that they belonged to the Serbs. Based on the analysis of various segments of the emperor?s narrative on the South Slavs, we come to the conclusion that he considered D…
Date of the composition of the Notitiae episcopatuum ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae nos. 4, 5 and 6
The Notitiae episcopatuum Ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae nos. 4, 5 and 6 are important sources for the reconstruction of the territorial organization of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the 9th century. There are different oppinions in the existing scholarly works about precise dating of those notitiae, ranging from the beginning of the 9th century, through the middle of it, up to its end. In this work, we analyse the content of each of the …

Serbia and Dioclea in the work of John Scylitzes
Recalling the fact that John Scylitzes in his Short History strictly distinguishes Serbia from Tribalia, the conclusion is made that Serbia and Tribalia in the work of John Scylitzes represent two clearly defined separate terms, with Tribalia meaning Dioclea and Serbia meaning Serbia (so-called Rascia and Bosnia). From that conclusion another one is derived - that Stephen Vojislav led his uprising against imperial authority in 1034-1036 and 1039-…
The byzantine title of Constantine Bodin
The paper considers the use of the title exousiastes on the newly discovered seal of Constantine Bodin. It analyses the meaning and use of this title in the sources of a diplomatic character of the 10th century, as well as its use in the 11th century sources. The question is posed why this title was used on Bodin?s seal instead of the title archon, which had been used for former Serbian rulers, as well as whether this phenomenon had any connectio…
The Slavs of the mid-Danube basin and the Bulgarian expansion in the first half of the 9th century
The Annals of the Frankish kingdom, under the year 818, contain a description of the arrival of legations of certain Abodrits, Guduskans and Timotans at the Frankish court in Heristal. This paper is devoted to an attempt at the further identification of these tribes and their habitats. It mainly discusses the possibility that the Timotans and Abodrits should be recognized as two of the so-called Seven Slavic tribes, over whom the Bulgarians impos…

By the end of the 8th century, after the expedition of 783 led by Staurakios the imperial forces began the reestablishing of the imperial control over those parts of the Peloponnesus which had previously been in the hands of independent Slavs for about 200 years. The result was the administrative reorganization of the whole of the peninsula. The administrative reorganization was followed by the ecclesiastical one. Thus, in the so-called Notitia 2…
