Researchers interviewed 32 third- and fourth-grade students who work with teacher candidates. Localized Othering
This research describes and analyzes the local history, use, meaning, and impact of the term “Rutter,” a colloquial term used in southeastern Ohio. The use of “Rutter” is closely associated with other negative Appalachian stereotypes. “Rutter” is a local surname that seems to have undergone a process of pejoration. We present findings from semi-structured interviews (n = 10) with adult residents, with particular attention to the impact this term …
