    Open Access•Jeannette Kamp•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration History•2026

This article compares the geographic backgrounds and socio-economic characteristics of formally admitted, tolerated but not admitted, and expelled migrants in nineteenth-century Amsterdam. The city authorities developed a dual system of migration regulation that enabled them to adapt to the city’s changing labour market from the 1870s onwards. This system made it possible to register and control migrants who were necessary for economic or enterta…

  • The Lure of the City: Migration, Crime, and Urbanization in Amsterdam, 1850-1905

Open Access•Marion Pluskota, Jeannette Kamp•ARTICLE•TSEG/ Low Countries Journal of…•2023•References: 3

This article questions the impact of urbanization on crime rates by studying Amsterdam migrants in front of the correctional court between 1850 and 1905 and connecting the historiography on crime and migration. The data shows no clear link between urbanization and a rise in crime, but it does reveal the role of external factors in the prosecution of specific crimes. The crisis experienced by the urban labour market in the late 1870 and 1880s had …

Open Access•Jeannette Kamp, Ariadne Schmidt•ARTICLE•Journal of Social History•2018

Extramarital sexuality has always been regarded as a transgression of the accepted norms. The increasing criminalization of extramarital sexuality after the Reformation led to an intensification of the prosecution of illegitimacy by secular authorities. But in the pluriform early modern legal landscape, a whole range of judicial, semi-judicial and extrajudicial institutions and mechanisms existed to exercise control over deviant behavior. This pa…

n\tThis article investigates the way in which informal control by household authorities affected how female crime was prosecuted in early modern Frankfurt am Main. Crime historians have argued that female crime was a particular urban phenomenon during this period. They have attributed this to a relatively high level of independence of women and the existence of many formal social control institutions. This article shows that due to strongly enfor…
