Helen Ting, Siew Chang Yee•ARTICLE•Journal of the Malaysian Branch…•2025

Chinese civil society actors' struggle for the place of the Chinese in an independent Malaya was fundamentally underpinned by their pursuit of the principle of equality and vision of a multicultural nation. The equal application of the principle of nationality by right of birth (jus soli) was central to this struggle, yet most mainstream scholars have simply labelled them as extremists or chauvinists. The Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) was con…

  • Women in Southeast Asian Nationalist Movements

Susan Blackburn, Helen Ting•BOOK•Women in Southeast Asian…•2013

Books on Southeast Asian nationalist movements make very little — if any — mention of women in their ranks. Biographical studies of politically active women in Southeast Asia are also rare. This book makes a strong case for the significance of women’s involvement in nationalist movements.\n\nThe authors show women negotiating their own subjectivity and agency at the confluence of colonialism, patriarchal traditions, and modern ideals of national …

  • Social Construction of Nation—A Theoretical Exploration

    Helen Ting•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2008•Cited by: 16•References: 9

In this article, the term “nation” is understood as a mental construct, and the formation of national identity as a dynamic, contentious historical process of social construction. Using the concept of “figured world of nationhood,” I discuss how the subjective, collective perception of the “objective,” virtual reality of a nation is (re)constituted and negotiated through social practices. In the same process, actors come to increasingly identify …
