Silver Ores and Deposits in the Southwest of Qing China and Adjoining Borderlands
This investigation of records on silver ores and worked deposits employs linguistic analysis and mineralogical information on known sites to explore types of deposits historically exploited in Yunnan and adjoining areas
Mining off the Map
A donation stele discovered in the 1980 records that the community of the Fulong silver mines raised some 4500 liang of silver to build a temple dedicated to the God of Wealth in 1814. The site in a remote mountain range in northern Yunnan evidently was a prosperous and populous mining town. Yet it appears in no government record. Centered on the case study, this paper provides insights into social self-organization of communities and the structu…
Mountain Rivers, Mountain Roads
The commercialized economy of late imperial China depended on efficient transport, yet transport technologies, transport economics as well as its role in local societies and in interdependencies of environments and human activities are acutely under-researched. Nanny Kim analyses two transports systems into the Southwest of Qing China through the long eighteenth century and up to the mid-nineteenth century civil wars. The case studies explore shi…
Xu Xiake’s Yunnan Journey and the Expansion of Mining in the Far Southwest during the Ming
Silver Mines and Mobile Miners in the Southwestern Borderlands of the Qing Empire
This article explores mining as the motor of temporary and permanent migration into the Far Southwest of Ming and Qing China. It focuses on the workforce of borderland silver mines, specifically on travel routes and the geography of recruitment. Durations and costs of the journeys reflect the existence of efficiently organized networks. The men who set out for the mines did so in the expectation of making money and returning home with handsome ga…
The houseboat in pre-modern China
This exploration of the history of the houseboat in China joins three investigative approaches: the context of transport systems, the technological perspective and transformations in cultural preferences. In a long-durational survey, it follows the boat as a means of transport but rarely as a means of travel from antiquity to about the third century. In the following centuries, boats became increasingly common, but they held little prestige compa…
Mining, Monies, and Culture in Early Modern Societies
River Control, Merchant Philanthropy, and Environmental Change in Nineteenth-Century China
This article investigates a series of projects for the improvement of shipping conditions of the Upper Yangzi in 1805-'40. The enterprise was undertaken by two Hankou merchants, one of whom published his 'Brief Account of the Taming of the Rapids'. An analysis of the detailed data of this source provides insights into navigation conditions and rates of environmental change on a major river, and into a major infrastructure project undertaken as me…
Single-Wheeled Mobility
The author focuses this article on the technical features, uses and importance of large housed wheelbarrows during China's late imperial period (1368-1911). The author notes that wheelbarrows on Chinese roads and footpaths had been a common sight in the plains of northern and eastern China until about 50 years ago, when bicycles and small, motorized vehicles began to supplant them. The role of wheelbarrows in China's pre-industrial mobility syste…
