  • Melancholia and the Lovesick Rapist in Medieval Iberian Literature

    Luis F López González•ARTICLE•Mediaevalia•2025

This article investigates the intersection between the medical condition of lovesickness and the social phenomenon of rape. While rape in medieval culture has been studied through the disciplinary lens of gender studies, theology, sociology, and legal theory, the influence of medical epistemology on these reprehensible acts of violence has been overlooked. The advent of the branch of knowledge known as medical humanities allows us to fill in this…

  • The Shrinking Heart”

    Open Access•Luis F López González•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2025

From the time of Classical Greek medicine through Early Modernity, sadness was considered both a mood and a diagnosable disease. Sadness was closely related to the physiological condition of melancholia, as both sadness and melancholia stemmed from a common etiology (excess of black bile), and both conditions could result in death. Sadness and melancholia had a symbiotic relationship; either one of the two could trigger the other. Because sadness…

  • Stereotypes and the Unpaid Debt in the Episode of Rachel and Vidas in Cantar de Mio Cid

    Open Access•Luis F López González•ARTICLE•Revista Canadiense de Estudios…•2020

This study addresses the controversial “arcas-de-arena” episode in the Cantar de Mio Cid. The usurious transaction between Mio Cid and the Jewish moneylenders Rachel and Vidas has led critics to interpret this scene in sundry ways. In this article, I provide overlooked textual evidence to argue that neither Mio Cid nor Martín Antolínez intends to honor the promise of repaying the moneylenders. Instead, they perceive the transaction as a deception…

  • Celestina as Parrhesiastes

    Luis F López González•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2020

In Fernando de Rojas’ La Celestina truth and truth-telling are dangerous activities that could lead the characters to be harmed or killed. After Michel Foucault’s 1983 series of conferences and classes at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Collège de France, parrhesia, the freedom to speak the truth, has become an important literary tool through which literary critics understand the way in which individuals interact and manipulate th…

  • Rabid Melancholy in Cantigas de Santa Maria

    Luis F López González•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2019

Rabid Melancholy in Cantigas de Santa Maria Luis F. López González Human frailty is the bedrock of Alfonso X’s 420 hymns and miracles, known as Cantigas de Santa Maria (ca. 257–280). This collection of poems, written in Galician-Portuguese, uses infirmities and psychological conditions to set the stage for the Virgin Mary, on whose praise the poems were written, to display Her power and mercy upon the suffering. Cantigas de Santa Maria (Cantigas …

  • Mio Cid’s Powerful Gaze

    Luis F López González•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2018

This study seeks to broaden the understanding of the lion scene in Cantar de Mio Cid by exploring the visual interaction between Mio Cid and the lion. Given the importance the poet gives to optical imagery throughout the Cantar, vision and the gaze play a preponderant role in Mio Cid’s courageous subduing of the lion after the wild beast escapes from its cage. This study argues that Mio Cid is able to defuse the fierceness of the lion through the…

  • Lucrecia’s Role as a Classical Nursemaid in Celestina

    Luis F López González•ARTICLE•Hispania•2018

Celestina scholarship has overlooked the important role Lucrecia plays in the unfolding of Calisto and Melibea’s sexual relationship and in the configuration of Rojas’s Tragicomedia. Critics have branded Lucrecia as the archetype of the disloyal servant who looks out for her own interests over those of Melibea. Contrary to other critics, this paper argues that Lucrecia’s character exhibits typological traits of the classical nursemaid, whose affe…
