Native American Women and the Burdens of Southern History by Daniel H. Usner
Originating as part of the Walter Lynwood Fleming Lectures in Southern History, this book joins Usner’s other work in redirecting histories of the south away from the Atlantic coast to focus on the lower Mississippi River and the colony of Louisiana. Since his first study of Louisiana’s frontier exchange economy, Usner has insisted that the south’s Indigenous peoples remained central players in the region’s history. Furthermore, his writings demo…

Beginning with such now-classic works as Richard White’s The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650–1815 (1991) and Gregory E. Dowd’s A Spirited Resistance: The North American Indian Struggle for Unity, 1745–1815 (1992), the region’…
Unsettling the West: Violence and State Building in the Ohio Valley
Rob Harper’s new work, Unsettling the West, is a welcome entry in the literature that examines early modern state building. Focusing on the eighteenth century Ohio Valley, Harper explores the interconnections between violence, state building, and colonialism. American state building in Ohio, Harper argues, challenges both top-down and bottom-up interpretations of the subject, and particularly disputes long-standing assumptions that only minimal v…

Of Missionaries and Their Cattle: Ojibwa Perceptions of a Missionary as Evil Shaman
In the 1830s, the Ojibwa of Fond du Lac first encountered Euro-American missionaries. The relationship quickly became strained by missionary assaults on Ojibwa culture. Puzzled by the missionaries' contradictory actions, the Ojibwa concluded that the missionaries were spiritually powerful but malevolent. Striking confirmation of missionary witchcraft occured when an Ojibwa was charged by a missionary's cow. The A. examines further Ojibwa attitude…

Factional Alignment Among the Minnesota Obibwe, 1850-1880
Political factionalism in Native American communities has long proven a topic of interest to scholars. An observation by Robert F. Berkhofer, Jr., suggests one compelling reason for this enduring fascination. "[N]o student of Indian societies, " he writes, "doubts the ubiquity nor the importance of factions in Indian affairs past or present." As a political phenomenon, factionalism is central to much of Native American history. It occurs in numer…
