  • Outcomes of Community-Acquired Acute Kidney Injury

Virginia Wang, Lindsay Zepel et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2025•References: 14

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) occurs outside of the hospital and is the most common form of AKI. CA-AKI is not well understood, which hinders efforts to prevent, identify, and manage CA-AKI. OBJECTIVE: Examine 30-day outcomes following CA-AKI using national administrative and lab data from the Veterans Health Administration (VA). RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SUBJECTS: VA primary care patients with rec…

  • Comprehensive Medication Review Completion Rates and Disparities After Medicare Star Rating Measure

Open Access•Anna Hung, Lauren E Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2024

This study found that adoption of CMR completion as a Star Rating quality measure was associated with higher CMR completion rates. The increase in CMR completion rates was achieved partly because Part D plans used stricter eligibility criteria to define eligible patients. Reductions in disparities for eligible Asian, Hispanic, and dual-Medicaid enrollees were seen, but not eliminated. These findings suggest that quality measures can inform plan b…

We compared Veterans Affairs (VA) expenditures of individuals participating in MOVE!, a VA behavioral weight loss program, and matched comparators 2 years before and 2 years after MOVE! initiation. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of Veterans who had one or more MOVE! visits in 2008-2017 who were matched…

    Katherine Miller, Katherine E M Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2022•References: 38

BACKGROUND: Of the 26.4 million family caregivers in the United States, nearly 40% report high levels of emotional strain and subjective burden. However, for the 5 million caregivers of Veterans, little is known about the experiences of caregivers of Veterans during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to examine pandemic-related changes of caregiver well-being outcomes. RESEARCH DESIGN, SUBJECTS, AND MEASURES:…

  • State variation in effects of state social distancing policies on Covid-19 cases

Open Access•Brystana G Kaufman, Rebecca Whitaker et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

  • Subgroups of High-Risk Veterans Affairs Patients Based on Social Determinants of Health Predict Risk of Future Hospitalization

    Dan V Blalock, Matthew L Maciejewski et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2021•References: 38

OBJECTIVE: Population segmentation has been recognized as a foundational step to help tailor interventions. Prior studies have predominantly identified subgroups based on diagnoses. In this study, we identify clinically coherent subgroups using social determinants of health (SDH) measures collected from Veterans at high risk of hospitalization or death. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: SDH measures were obtained for 4684 Veterans at high risk of hospita…

    Courtney H Van Houtven, Steven J Lippmann et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2020•References: 26

BACKGROUND: The CAregiver Perceptions About CommunIcaTion with Clinical Team members (CAPACITY) instrument measures how care partners perceive themselves to be supported by the patient's health care team and their experiences communicating with the team. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the measurement properties (ie, structural validity of the construct and internal consistency) of the CAPACITY instrument in care partners of…

  • Comprehensive Support for Family Caregivers of Post-9/11 Veterans Increases Veteran Utilization of Long-term Services and Supports

    Open Access•Megan Shepherd-Banigan, Valerie A Smith et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2018

Family caregivers are an important component of the long-term services and supports (LTSS) system. However, caregiving may have negative consequences for caregiver physical and emotional health. Connecting caregivers to formal short-term home- and community-based services (HCBS), through information resources and referrals, might alleviate family caregiver burden and delay nursing home entry for the patient. The aim of this study was to evaluate …

  • Factors Associated With Having a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant as Primary Care Provider for Veterans With Diabetes Mellitus

Open Access•Perri Morgan, Christine M Everett et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2017

Expanded use of nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) is a potential solution to workforce issues, but little is known about how NPs and PAs can best be used. Our study examines whether medical and social complexity of patients is associated with whether their primary care provider (PCP) type is a physician, NP, or PA. In this national retrospective cohort study, we use 2012-2013 national Veterans Administration (VA) electronic…

    Matthew L Maciejewski, Valerie A Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2010•References: 28

CONTEXT: Bariatric surgery provides significant reductions in weight and comorbidity, and has the potential to reduce health care utilization. It is unknown whether health care utilization and expenditures are reduced for veterans after bariatric surgery. OBJECTIVES: To examine health care utilization and expenditures of severely obese individuals before and after bariatric surgery within the Veterans Health Administration. DESIGN, SETTING, AND P…

  • Art. XIV.—The Iron Pillar of Dhār

    Open Access•Valerie A Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•1898

In the article on “The Iron Pillar of Delhi” I noticed that another iron pillar exists at Dhār in Central India, but observed that no detailed description of that pillar was known to me. I now find that a description of this very remarkable monument has been printed—I can hardly say published—in a report by the indefatigable Dr. Führer
