Rural community members’ experiences and perceptions regarding lethal means safety in the context of suicide and accidental death rates
BACKGROUND: Together with Veterans (TWV), a community-based suicide prevention intervention, is being implemented in rural locations across the United States, with individuals designing and implementing action plans based on community-specific strengths and needs. To increase understanding regarding lethal means safety (LMS) among those living in 3 diverse rural communities where TWV is being implemented (Mississippi [MS], New Mexico [NM], Oregon…
Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts Among Women Veterans Using VA Reproductive Health Care
Suicide Rates by Age and Time Among American Indian and Alaskan Native Veterans
OBJECTIVE: Although recent work has highlighted high rates of suicide among American Indian and Alaska Native individuals who served in the US military, to date, a comprehensive evaluation of age-specific suicide rates, over time, has yet to be conducted. METHODS: Population-based retrospective cohort study. Average annual suicide rates (2005-2020) were computed. The cohort included 207,955 Native Veterans who were alive as of January 1, 2005, an…
Women Veterans’ Perspectives on Suicide Prevention in Reproductive Health Care Settings
Suicide Among American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans Who Use Veterans Health Administration Care
BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) veterans may be at elevated risk for suicide, but little is known about suicide among this population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of AI/AN veterans who received health care services provided or paid for by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) between October 1, 2002, and September 30, 2014, and who were alive as of September 30, 2003. Age-specific and age-adjus…
Institutional betrayal and help-seeking among women survivors of military sexual trauma
Women veterans experience disproportionately high rates of military sexual trauma (MST). Nonetheless, many MST survivors delay or forgo health care, particularly within Veterans Health Administration (VHA) settings. Institutional betrayal (IB) has been posited as a potential explanation for this. The current study examined if IB was associated with women veterans' willingness to seek VHA and non-VHA mental health and medical care, prior use of VHA…
Interpersonal Violence Throughout the Lifespan
BACKGROUND: Female veterans experience interpersonal violence (ie, physical and sexual violence) more often than male veterans and nonveteran females. There is limited knowledge of types of interpersonal violence across the lifespan in relation to suicidal ideation and suicide attempt. Prior research has also focused on those accessing the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care. OBJECTIVE: This study examined if physical and sexual violence at…
Responses to Traumatic Brain Injury Screening Questions and Suicide Attempts among Those Seeking Veterans Health Administration Mental Health Services
Those with a positive TBI screen at mental health intake had a higher proportion of SBRs than those who screened negative for TBI. Findings provided further psychometric support for the TBI-4. Moreover, results suggest the inclusion of this screen could prove to be helpful in identifying those who may be at risk for future suicide attempt within 1-year post screening
A Factor Analysis and Exploration of Attitudes and Beliefs Toward Complementary and Conventional Medicine in Veterans
BACKGROUND: Although Veterans utilize complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) at rates comparable with civilians, little is known about Veterans' attitudes and beliefs toward CAM. Measures to increase such knowledge may help to identify treatment preferences, particularly among those with signature conditions from the recent conflicts [ie, traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)]. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study …
