Factors Associated With 30-Day Hospital Readmissions Among Participants in a Care Transition Quality Improvement Program
Discharge from hospital to home is a vulnerable period for older adults who have multiple care needs. The Safe Transitions for Elderly People (STEP) program is a care transition program for Medicare fee-for-service patients 75 years and older discharged to home from a community hospital. This quality improvement project (a) compares 30-day hospital readmission rates between 498 STEP participants and 722 patients eligible for STEP but not particip…
Association of Denture Use with Sleep‐disordered Breathing Among Older Adults
This preliminary study found an association between sleep-disordered breathing and denture use, which may represent a proxy for a relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and edentulism. Given the common occurrence of both conditions among older adults, the observed relationship warrants a more detailed investigation of the mechanisms whereby loss of teeth leads to upper airway closure during sleep
Objective and Subjective Measures of the Quality of Managed Care in Nursing Homes

OBJECTIVES: To compare the medical care received by NH residents enrolled …
Using multidimensional health measures in older persons to identify risk of hospitalization and skilled nursing placement
The Costs of Urinary Incontinence in Nursing Homes
A simple model was used to calculate the contribution of urinary incontinence (UI) to the costs of nursing home care. First-order costs are defined as the costs of managing UI: supplies, laundry, and labor. Second-order costs are defined as the costs of managing the complications of UI. Data were gathered from nursing homes, medical supply companies, and a large laundry company. First-order costs of four common methods of managing UI range betwee…
