  • Health Care Access Expansions and Use of Veterans Affairs and Other Hospitals by Veterans

Open Access•Jean Yoon, KENNETH W KIZER et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2022

This cohort study examines changes in the use of Veterans Affairs (VA) and non-VA hospitals by VA enrollees and mortality associated with these policies

  • Do the unlabeled response categories of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire satisfy the monotonicity assumption of simple-summated scoring

Open Access•Visith Uy, Ron D Hays et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2020

  • Responsiveness to cigarette prices by different racial/ethnic groups of US adults

Tingting Yao, Michael Ong et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2017

Our results suggest that raising cigarette prices, such as via tobacco tax increases, would result in reduced cigarette consumption for all racial/ethnic groups. The magnitude of the effect and the impact on cessation and reduced smoking intensity differ across these groups

  • The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act Evaluation Study

    Jessica M Harwood, Francisca Azocar et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2017•References: 19

OBJECTIVE: The federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) sought to eliminate historical disparities between insurance coverage for behavioral health (BH) treatment and coverage for medical treatment. Our objective was to evaluate MHPAEA's impact on BH expenditures and utilization among "carve-in" enrollees. METHODS: We received specialty BH insurance claims and eligibility data from Optum, sampling 5,987,776 adults enrolled i…

  • Lung Cancer Care Before and After Medicare Eligibility

Open Access•Marco D Huesch, Michael Ong et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2016

Uninsured and underinsured near-elderly may not have timely investigation, diagnosis, or care of cancer. Prior studies suggest Medicare eligibility confers significant and substantial reductions in mortality and increases in health service utilization. We compared 2245 patients diagnosed with lung cancer at ages 64.5 to 65 years and 2512 patients aged 65 to 65.5 years, with 2492 patients aged 65.5 to 66 years (controls) in 2000 to 2005. Compared …

  • Prostate Cancer Care Before and After Medicare Eligibility

Open Access•Marco D Huesch, Michael Ong et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2016

Prior studies suggest Medicare eligibility confers significant and substantial reductions in mortality and beneficial increases in health service utilization. We compared 13,882 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer at ages 63 to 64 years with 14,774 patients diagnosed at ages 65 to 66 (controls) in 2004 to 2007. Compared with controls, patients diagnosed with prostate cancer before Medicare eligibility had no statistically significant or meani…

  • Estimates of Smoking-Related Property Costs in California Multiunit Housing

Michael Ong, Michael K Ong et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•References: 3

We systematically evaluated smoking-related costs in multiunit housing. From 2008 to 2009, we surveyed California multiunit housing owners or managers on their past-year smoking-related costs and smoke-free policies. A total of 27.1% of respondents had incurred smoking-related costs (mean $4935), and 33.5% reported complete smoke-free policies, which lowered the likelihood of incurring smoking-related costs. Implementing statewide complete smoke-…

  • Sensitivity to Cigarette Prices Among Individuals With Alcohol, Drug, or Mental Disorders

Michael Ong, Michael K Ong et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Over 40% of all US smokers have comorbid alcohol, drug, or mental disorders. Using data from the 2000–2001 Healthcare for Communities survey, we conducted multivariate logistic regressions to examine these individuals' sensitivity to cigarette prices. We found that a 10% increase in cigarette prices was associated with 18.2% less smoking participation among individuals with alcohol, drug, or mental disorders, except those with alcohol dependence.…

  • Free Nicotine Replacement Therapy Programs vs Implementing Smoke-Free Workplaces

Michael Ong, Michael K Ong et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 25

We compared the cost-effectiveness of a free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) program with a statewide smoke-free workplace policy in Minnesota. We conducted 1-year simulations of costs and benefits. The number of individuals who quit smoking and the quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were the measures of benefits. After 1 year, a NRT program generated 18 500 quitters at a cost of $7020 per quitter ($4440 per QALY), and a smoke-free workplace …
